Hi,
Going to central europe this summer on backpacking trip. I was wondering what the train tickets are between the cities (i.e. budapest-prague) Is it worth it to buy a European East railpass(which comes down to 30$cad per day)?

Is it possible to buy a railpass in a central european train station? ( I saw some dude do that last year in amsterda)

thanks

Whether a railpass is right for you depends on how much traveling you are doing; if it's just Budapest-Prague, it's not worth it to buy a pass. Chances are if you are taking at least 2-3 long trips by train, a railpass will be a better value than individual tickets.

You can check prices at the Deutsche Bahn website: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.19&newrequest=yes&

If prices aren't listed there you can also get a general idea at www.raileurope.com (though raileurope adds a surcharge on each ticket, so actual prices if you purchased the ticket at the station are typically 15-20% lower than indicated on the raileurope site).

Theoretically it is possible to purchase a railpass at a Eurail aid office in Europe, though prices are definitely higher than they would be in the US or Canada. Also, since some cities/countries don't have Eurail Aid offices, your options are extremely limited if you want to purchase a pass while in Europe.

Prices are typically higher if you can even buy a railpass in-country. For instance, I don't think you can buy some of the German railpasses once you are in Germany.

Depends who "they" are - probably both youth fares and student fares exist! You may find some passes/tickets are limited to under 26 or under 18 year olds. You will also find student fares which can be for anybody with an ISIC card, including mature students. You can search for ISIC discounts by country here: http://www.isic.org/sisp/index.htm?fx=isic.discounts
