New member here. I entered the 2 car class upgrade and AAA. I booked a Chevy malibu or similar which is a standard...2 classes up seems to be a premium (grand marquis or similar)
just wanted to know what types of cars they have in the premium category.
Thanks!
also is it a good idea to sign up for the free hertz #1 club and then reserve it? or does it matter..thanks

H class (premium) is almost always a Grand Marquis or Crown Vic but the Amanti and Azera are H class and the Avalon is H as well. The 300 is H and YF along with the Charger.
Most likely you are in the Ford or Merc...or an SUV/Van
And yes if you plan on renting a more than it is worth it. The first rental you still have to go to the main counter for the first rental and you arent going to get a better car most likely.

Signing up with #1 Gold may net you benefits later, but will not affect what upgrades you get for this rental, since you have no particular status with Hertz.
Initially, the easiest difference to note starts on Rental #2, when you can skip the counter completely, if you are at a full-service Gold location. Your name will appear on an electronic board, next to a space number. You walk to your car, get in, drive to the security guard, show the guard your D/L and contract (which will be hanging on the rearview mirror) and away you go...
Once you get some rentals under your belt, additional benefits follow.

so most likely theyll put me in a ford or merc.. ewwww.
why did you put the 'or van/suv' in there? is that considered premium as well?
i'm really aiming for the 300 or charger:)

thecourtyard,
You can reserve it online. Then when you get to the destination, if you go to your assigned stall and its not the car you specified, you can always go to the #1 Gold counter in the building and request a different vehicle. They might ding you a upsell fee or something, but be persistent sometimes. There have been reports of problems at some locations that don't pay attention to their fleet and you point out the availablity to them.

You can call...but I have found that there are really no guarantees. A LOT depends on the location you are renting from. Some locations carry vehicles from different collections, others do not. Oh...and if you call the national number, they can never really guarantee anything IME. Call the local place directly.
Now, I have also noticed that if you walk up to the counter and then to the stall with your car and you do not like it, you can take the contract out and walk to the counter and exchange it.
So, moral of the story is, ask early and ask often...just do not be shocked if the car you were expecting has been replaced with an "upgrade."

thanks guys..haha
so i got a reservation for a standard malibu and used the coupon for 2 car upgrade which should get me up to premium level. i just hope they honor the 2 car upgrade because it says subject to availability... im sure if im nice to the people at the counter i can get them to switch me out of a marquis or crown vic to a little more nicer car...can't wait!

SUVS and Vans are higher than Premium as hertz sees it and when they run out of car types that is what they give out. 300 Touring and Chargers are YF so they arent even a Premium. I think the Hemi is a YH, but you dont see many of them floating around.
Most of the time if you are at a full service gold location they have the keys in the car and I will go find what I want that isnt assigned and bring the keys in and say I want this...Some give me nasty looks, but then again they can stop putting Tauri and junk cars in my space!!!

Y anything means "specialty", H use to be Premium Import (Infiniti G35, Toyota Avalon, Kia Amanti), but now I think it basically means one level above G Premium.
For example, YF is a special full size, which is a Taurus with a sunroof. Vs F which is just a plain Taurus.

H = Premium
YH = Specialty Premium
The Y usually means extra options ie. leather or sunroof or upgraded model or something extra

Since you booked a midsize (c class) I believe you will be upgraded into the premium (g class) which is like said above, usually a crown vic or grand marquis, although I've seen the 300 touring in that class as well. The 300c (hemi) is in fact, a YH. I find h-class cars *much* better then g-class, although they are both considered premium. My favorite from the g-class has to be the lucerne.
Anything with a 'y' in front of it, let's say like a 'yc' usually means specialty-something, in this case a specialty midsize. But since they have started using the e-class as well (fusion and other vehicles), I guess they could technically say the f-class is the double upgrade from your midsize (c-class to e-class (maybe d?) and then to the f-class, which would only be a fullsize... I can always be wrong though.

oh great. heh. thanks everyone for the info...
is there any way to upgrade to the y's from the "h" by paying a certain extra per day. i know thrifty blue chip lets you do this..does hertz gold have a similar option?
well i have a few back up cars booked at different rental companies just in case. if i get stuck with a cheezy car for a 'premium'/full size hertz price...i think ill just walk over to the next counter and get a full size car for a 'full size' price because it seems hertz is slightly more expensive for basic cars.
not a big deal..just a rental car anyways..i was just trying to get the best bang for my buck.
i hope i get lucky:)

Well if you see anything else on the lot that might have gotten your interest, you can always go to the counter and ask about a upgrade possibility.. and, depending on the agent's 'greedy-ness' you might get away with something really nice for a very small charge... I guess you can also can call in a day or two in advance and have them try to keep you something nice :)

i know some people said i might be able to but i just want to know how successful most are able to do this...its with hertz gold if that makes a difference.
thanks again everyone for all your help and ill keep you updated.
