Hertz - Driving 3800 Miles In Two Weeks (Will I Get Into Trouble?)

I am planning a road trip in August, and will need to drive approx 3,750 miles during the two weeks I plan to have the vehicle. Will I get in any trouble from Hertz for driving this much? I know they claim to have unlimited mileage, but is it truly unlimited?

Hi there,

I haven't gone that far, but I did at one time do 2'000 miles in 2 weeks with Hertz ... no complaint at all.

Cheers,

No problem at all. I once returned a call inside of 24 hours with nearly 700 miles on it - check-in agent did look at his computer a second time (to make sure he hadn't misread the mileage), then shrugged, handed me the receipt, said something to the effect of "you've been busy."

Enjoy your trip.

I have done 1,830 within two days (Los Angeles to Medford and back) and they didn't blink either. That was a while ago, but should not be a problem.

I wouldn't think it'd be a problem...I've done some rentals (both Hertz and National) that were over 500 miles per day. (Disclaimer: I've never done a high-mileage rental in Canada - no idea if there is any fine print there that differs from the U.S.)

There was a recent National thread about a guy getting nastygrams after an extended series of high-mileage rentals. One two-week rental in the 275 mi/day range shouldn't trigger a nastygram though. :)

I believe my max was 2,200 miles in 9 days (actually, that was accumulated within 3 counties in Florida!) on a Toyota Highlander from Hertz. Not a word was said....

I once did 6600 miles with a Lincoln TownCar in 12 days (several years ago). It did cause some raised eyebrows from Hertz, but no real complaints.

Interestingly, though, I recently rented a VW Passat in the UK that had a transparent sticker on the instrument panel stating that not returning the car by 13,800 total miles (about 6000 to go at the time we rented) would result in a penalty. Upon returning the car, I asked for the reason for this. The answer (predictably) was that they wanted to service the cars at certain intervals and wanted to make sure the car does not exceed service periods.

You should be fine.

Cheers,
T.

We did 2,500 miles in three days once in a Navigator, EWR-MSP. Took turns driving, stopped only for gas and food. When we got there, we loaded up our "items" then drove right back.

30 days, 9,800 miles. Not one word at return.
