with miles. Is there an easier way than calling the Voyager department to check for availability, then booking the economy tickets, then getting the electronic coupons (with the online discount) and then calling Voyager again to process the upgrade.

The agent waited online while I bought the tickets and issued the upgrades. (I had checked on ANA for availability and had the transactions all set up ready to go before I called.) He could see it all happening and as soon as he had the upgrade numbers he issued the new tickets. Then he sent me the e-mail confirmation. All done in one call. A bit surprising actually since I effectively used the call centre but got the on-line discount.
There would be an extra step if the taxes increase. If, for example, it included a flight ex LHR you would still need to go to an SAA or Voyager desk to pay the extra taxes.

Thanks Cheetah_SA.
My flights are all ex LHR, so it sounds like the taxes will be an issue.
What availability codes should we look for on the ANA tool?

chigrr, you don't look for codes you just look for award availability. SA books upgrades and flight awards into the same buckets so if there is award availability you can get upgrades. (Or at least that used to be the case - I was told by Voyager while booking the very trip above that they had changed that, though it didn't seem to change upgrade availability for me.)
