what is the cheapest way to get into town? I have an award coming up and can extend my connection at MIA to up to 23 hours, so I thought about spending a night there? Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this would be an affordable thing to do? or is it expensive to get around there?

Thanks :-:

There is public transportation that goes between the airport and the rest of Miami. It costs less than two dollars a ride. I visited Miami years ago and at the advice of a friend I was visiting, took a shuttle from the airport to her condo in South Beach. The cost was something like $20 or maybe more (this was years ago). I took a public bus for the return trip to the airport. It took about two to three times as long, but the ride was far more colorful as it went through the city instead of just via the freeway. My only luggage was a small rolling backpack so that made it easier since the bus could get crowded at times. Here is a link to the miami public transit system (http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/home.asp)

Have fun!

Are you going to Miami or Miami Beach?

If you're going to Miami Beach, take the J bus:

If you're going to downtown, take the 7 bus to downtown

or the 37, 42 or the 57 bus to the Metrorail, and then the subway to downtown:

Thanks to both of you.

I actually don't know whether to go to Miami or Miami beach. Would one or the other be more doable for 23 hours? It will be december also, so what is the weather like then? can you swim on the beach?

Thanks...

Nope, you can't swim in the beach in december. Water would be too cold. Daytime temp could be all over the place from a frigid 40 degree to the balmy high 60s.

Bah. I've swum in the ocean on Miami Beach in December before. It has been 80 in December. I lived there 20 years, I know!

Unless you are a fainting flower, the beach is a great place. However, make sure to shower before getting back on the plane (there are showers on the beach)

Hey there,

Born, raised and living here. :) December temperatures can, if a strong enough cold front comes thru, drop. However, if there are no fronts passing, it can easily remain in the 70 - 90 degree range.

Crazy...Most December days are in the 70s and sunny. Water is cold by Florida standards, but for those on the Great Lakes, quite palatable, high 60s to low 70s probably. There is not much to do in Miami, so head for Miami Beach, South Beach, and if sunny, hang out. If cloudy, there are movies, Wolfsonian Museum and the new World Museum of Erotic Art...among other things to do. Clubs, bars, and the SoBe pasttime, people watching. You will enjoy.
