The Harvard Business school educated geniuses at Hilton are currently building a Hampton Inn that sits directly next to a major freight train line. Trains pass 10 or 12 times a day, with a least 2 or 3 in the middle of the night.
I'm not being bitter towards Hilton - no recent problems. I'm loyal, but think this decision is nuts. I like Hampton and try to stay there whenever possible. However, when this place opens - you may want to stay clear. It's on Rt 29 at I 66. :(

Wouldn't those be franchisees rather than Hilton "geniuses"?

The downtown Hampton Inn in SAN also sits a few feet from an active railroad and it isn't bad, imo.
The desk also gives out free earplugs :)

They could sell the rooms closest to the tracks at a premium, featuring a vibra-massage function in the sleeping arrangements...
Seriously, this can't come as a surprise, one can only hope appropriate insulation and other magic is being suitably applied during construction. The noise of a train is far less than that of, say, a large jet on takeoff, yet many of us stay at airport hotels all the time. Adjusting for distances from the various sources of noise and the like, how different can it really be?

I live about 2 miles from this intersection and I sometimes hear the horns in the middle of the night. It's a major intersection, so there's no night-time noise abatement procedures. Also, no offense to any Harvard grads. I'm from CT, so I'm a little partial to Yale. :D

Sounds like the Hilton in Columbus, GA. It occupies a renovated warehouse (real brick walls in some rooms) and there are freight train tracks running right down the middle of the street next to the Hilton. I thought the tracks were no longer used, but learned differently when I was awaken at 1:00 AM. Those freight train engineers make liberal use of their horns.
