Has anyone tried the "Ssam Bap" in OZ which u put steamed rice and beef onto veggie and then wrap it and eat it??

Also, can someone compare OZ and KE's bibimbap? I mean like which airline's bibimbap is tastier??

I have tried "SsamBap" on ICN-FRA.
I enjoyed it very much, having lived in Korea for almost 7 long years.
I personally like Ssam Bap on OZ better than Bibimbap served on KE.
One can naturally argue about it.
Speaking of Bibimbap, it was KLM which first introduced it on board in early 1990s. They no longer served it on board any more.
Lufthansa also serves Bibimbap on ICN-FRA and MUC with a bit different ingredients. But it seems to me more authentic bibimpap that KE's.
Here again, I prefer LH's Bibimbap better to KE's.

how do u actually eat the Ssam Bap??

well for me, i hv only tried KE's bibimbap~
imao, itz ok as itz kinda unique if u compare it w/ other kinds of meals..
also, i like their breakfast porridge!!!!!

I had the ssam bap in Jan 2006 on OZ... delicious!

I know actually know how to eat it, so i just looked at my Korean seatmap. Took the rice, beef, and veggies, put it into the provided bowl with the red pepper paste, mixed everything together, then used the leafy greens as a wrap. Mmmm...

I had a pic, but lost it in my HD crash :(

Just had it ICN-NRT. One of the best in-flight meals I ever ate! Delicious :p

Oh I didn't know the ssambap also available on short hauls. I took that one on ICN-LAX few months ago. I can't believe it's inflight meal. Incredible.

I can't give you a comparison... the OZ Bibimbap is the only one I've had!

Western choices on OZ or KE are not as good (certainly better than what UA offers in business) and I almost always choose a Korean choice (once in a while I'd choose a steak).

Ah, all of above was in C class.

F on NRT-ICN, I enjoyed Kyo-Kaiseki (a traditional Japanese meal). Certainly NH has it better, but this is better than SQ's kyo-kaisei in F (NRT-SIN).

What does LH do differently? Do all of them have meat in it?

I had it ICN-SFO. I liked it except for the fact that they had a lot of weird, odd vegetables rather than just red leaf or romaine lettuce (i.e. weird herby greens, sesame leaves, that kind of thing:(). Other than that it was good.:)

As for how to eat the ssam bap, you put a bit of rice, the bulgogi, and whatever other fixins you'd like to put in it (the ssamjang sauce thing also) and then you wrap it up and eat the whole thing in one bite. It's pretty good if you like that kind of thing.

Just had the fortune to enjoy it in C on ICN-SEA. (How I got to snag a C seat is a whole 'nother story. :D) As a native Korean, I can say that this is virtually the same as many restaurants in Korea serve Ssambap, except of course for the quantity.

Those 'weird, odd' vegetables are considered as 'upscale' versions of your run-of-the-mill red-leaf lettuce. :p And supposed to be better for your health, stamina and whatever else you can think of, not to mention better tasting. (Hey there, why are you smirking? ;))

As to how I eat it, I prefer to have some meat, a slice of raw garlic (not served in Asiana version, for the obvious reason I guess -- too bad :p) and Ssamjang (that brown paste) on a couple of different veggies, wrap it, chew a couple times without rice to savor the flavor, and then finally let rice join the others in my mouth. And maybe finish it with a piece of chili (be careful, it can be quite hot) with ssam-jang, rinse my tongue with a spoonful of the soup, and repeat until there's nothing left.

I think someone else already mentioned this in another thread, but Ssambap seems to be served only on ex-ICN flights. On my particular flight, the menu indicated that SEA-ICN serves Bibimbap instead of Ssambap. (in C)

Oh, and the menu also mentions than you can request a snack between the two meals. I asked for a bowl of wonton soup when my seatmate asked for a bowl of ramyun. All I can say is: try either, you won't regret it! Wonton soup has shrimp-and-pork wontons in clear bonito soup. Ramyun (or ramen) seemed to be the usual stuff popular in Korea. Not the pour-hot-water-and-wait stuff, but properly cooked -- though from a packaged instant noodle. Other options I think were salad, sandwich, and maybe one more thing I don't remember.

Nitpicking for a moment, (ignore the rest if you're not interested in trivia) those leaves with jagged-edge stupidhead referred to as "sesame-leaves" are actually "perilla-leaves". Since the Korean words for sesame and perilla are similar (direct translation of the Korean word for sesame (Chamkkae) would be "true sesame" while that for perilla (Deulkkae) would be "field sesame" or "wild sesame") but almost nobody other than Koreans (and maybe Japanese) consume perilla as food, not to mention that the word perilla is not as well known as sesame, many Koreans find it simpler to refer to Kkaennip (perilla leaf) as "sesame-leaf".

Dude, I'm native Korean too, and even I don't eat perilla leaves or whatever they are. It's just the taste (and partly the smell)-very weird. I just like plain old romaine lettuce better-sweeter, much more crunchy. And it's stiffer so stuff doesn't go falling all over my lap. But then I'm pretty Americanised as far as food goes (i.e. I must be the only Korean person on the planet who, for example, doesn't like kimchi). My sister questions if I'm actually Korean or was adopted. :D

I did see one odd fellow Korean that hated Kkaennip, though in her case it was texture, not taste nor smell. Even though it's pretty rare, I guess you don't really have to blame your americanized taste for that. :p I also hear there are quite a few kids that hate kimchi so I would hazard a guess that you might be retaining some of your childhood taste in regard to Korean foods.

I like your idea of adding sautéed mushrooms to the mix. I should try it. Who cares if it's authentic or not as long as it's tasty enough? :D Or, how about entirely replacing meat with mushrooms? That'd be a great alternative for vegetarians! ^

That has never occured to me but now that I'm a broke and poor college student on his own, I should try that! ^ Though when I'm at home I get to eat the full version with the meat (sometimes pork, sometimes beef), ssamjang (my mom used to make a pretty awesome one with peanut butter-I'll try to remember how she made it), the round radish slice things that come in plastic packages (the "ssam moo"-my favorite fixin EVER-sometimes I just eat it on its own-could have sworn on my grave I went through about two containers of that stuff a week when I was at home for the summer) and all the other stuff. I replaced the meat with cod fillets from Trader Joe's a couple times (out of meat and didn't feel like cooking) and that turned out to be pretty awesome (The cod would be had with mayonnaise and a giant squirt of lemon).^

I think my dislike of kimchi is quite possibly related to my dislike of spicy foods rather than a retention of childhood tastes (for example, I liked McDonald's food when I was 10-you couldn't pay me to eat at McD's now) :D

Oh, also try, when you're making a round of samgyubsal (you know, the pork belly thing), those big oyster mushrooms, sliced flat, cooked in a bit of the pork fat. It's SOOOOO good ^

I was in C on SYD-ICN-SYD in early and mid-September and I didn't see ssam bap as an option. Is this offered on every route or just specific ones? I've got another SYD-ICN-SYD coming up this weekend and anything else I can try aside from the "Western" options and the bibimbap would be great (I love bibimbap but I really much prefer dolsot bibimbap, not to mention I can only eat OZ's bibimbap so many times before I'd want to strangle myself). The past few flights I've been reduced to ordering the ramyun which fills me up, gets served fast, and removed just as fast.

And while we're on food, has anyone ever ordered the "laver roll"? I think this is just the Korean version of sushi rolls?

AFAIK SYD-ICN is bimbimbap and will always be bimbimbap. You will find Ssam bap more often on shorter routes. I just had it today on ICN-NRT.
