Just booked an award flight LAX-Bangkok on business class but I have never flown them or even heard much of them.
I have searched this board for some reviews and found some menus but not really anybody bashing the service, so I assume it is good, but wanted to get a few thoughts from the pros.
Thank you - please let me know if I missed any posts - links very much appreciated!

I've never flown asiana C class, but people say the service and meal is good. However, hardware may not be that good. 747 and some of 777 has old style seats, while some of 777 and all 333 have new lie-angle seat. 747 has ptv but hard to watch (program schedule sucks, small monitor). 777 and 333 have decent sized PTV or AVOD screen and good. If you fly this month, I have movie list. Please note that your flight will have only "some" of them.

Welcome to FlyerTalk Dhunt. What bobbybrown was saying is very correct. The hardware of OZ is very different.
There are many reviews here in this forum as well as on the Sktrax website (http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/asiana.htm). OZ has just recently been given 5 star status.
You will experience a very friendly and dedicated crew with great customer service. The food is good with plenty of choices and I never had them run out of my meal choice ever.
Depending on your schedule you will have quite a long layover in ICN. You should have enough time to take the bus to downtown or relax at the nice lounges at ICN. The airport is quite nice.

There is also a reasonably priced transit hotel at ICN airport (airside). As long as you are not on the 747s you will be fine with OZ.

Agree with above posters.
C seat on triple7 is good, and service is top notch. Just stay clear of ancient 744, and you will be fine.

I have flown first and business class only on Asiana. Simply EXCELLENT and one of the best in the skies. Their business class is now being upgraded with tilted "flat" seats which are very nice. Amazing airline, great food, service and seat. Excellent lounge in Seoul. No amenity kits in business class which annoys me! ENJOY.

If this was an award, I'm assuming it was a Star Alliance award, so I'm curious why you didn't choose a non-stop flight on TG rather than OZ? If you needed a stop-over in ICN, then fine, but if you didn't need a stop-over I'd choose the non-stop personally, and the TG product in C is very good.

Assuming OP is using his MP miles, getting TG non stop award in C is virtually impossible. UA has blocked most of TG C award between US and BKK.

Thanks a lot for the comments! I always hesitate as to what's more important - hardware or service - I go back and forth after each flight. Both wife and I are somewhat down to earth. As long as the seats are comfy, we'll be fine.
I am indeed using my MP Miles for the trip. I am on the phone right now with UAL award line. My return was supposed to be Saigon-Singapore-LAX and Singapore Airlines apparently did not confirm (aka rejected) my itinerary, so I am on the phone and the agent is resubmitting it. Never heard of this, but I guess happens with partners.
There were no direct flights to BKK when I checked for the desired dates. I don't know if they were sold out or blocked them. The trip is for my wife and I and with two people booking around Thanksgiving, we were happy to hit anything in business. I cautiously accepted Asiana, but now it sounds there are no reasons for worry. I do indeed have a long layover in Seoul - about 6 hours, which is OK as long as I know that in advance and can plan for it. I have been delayed longer than that before ;). However, if anyone has a suggestion to try a different route, let me know. One aspect is we are travelling around Thanksgiving time, so not so easy with tickets.
Again thank you so much for all the kind wishes and advice!

OP has no way to stay clear of 744, LAX-ICN for sure is using 744 or 74M, 777 only flies out of SEA and SFO

Be aware that 777 is the only plane being upgraded, 747 still has horrible seats in F and C, and is not going to renew anytime soon, and they serve most of the long hual routes. Service and Food are excellent though.

You got me really intrigued in the 777 route.
Do you think United will be open to Route me through SFO? This would add another leg but I am willing to take a short hop for the sake of nicer 12 hours spent on board. I will check in with the Award Desk tomorrow - will let you know how it goes. I guess alternatively, I could buy a one way to SFO for $100/person. Is that worth it?
Another thought - the trip is in November - would OZ upgrade the aircraft or there are no reasons to expect that?

The night flight LAX-ICN is on 777, the afternoon flight is on 744 or 74M.

OZ will have another new 777 by then, and (maybe) upgrade other 777s too by then. It's too early to guess something though. At Jul, the night flight which is 777 will be increased to 5/w.
And F/C class of some of 747/74M may be upgraded by then also. OZ announced to upgrade them by 2008 or so.

OZ are going to upgrade their F/C class of 747s? Any idea of what the new F would be like?
BTW, I'm new here.
So greetings guys!

Just wanted to post the result of my bookings. First of all, thank you everyone for pitching in - it was very helpful.
Was not able to get anything via SFO to BKK for the desired dates, so I am sticking with my LAX-BKK flight via Seoul. I will just hope OZ upgrades the planes and if not, I will catch up on the way back with Singapore Airlines.
I checked my schedule and there is not much of a layover in Seoul, just 2 hours before the connection to BKK, so it works out nicely.
Now I am just looking forward to roaming Bangkok and laying on the beach of Ko Phi Phi; it is just a bummer I have to wait till Nov.

I'm sure you will enjoy OZ, and I'm surprised nobody recommended that you check to see if F awards are available from LAX-ICN on your days of travel? While everyone agrees the 744 J seats are not so great, the F seats (while old) are 180-degree horizontal seats. Also, F service is really the best I've encountered (and that includes excellent service on SQ and MH).

Hi. Where did you get this list from? Is it on the Asiana website? Am flying ICN-LHR-ICN in C in June and although I don't think I get AVOD, I would still like to try and catch a movie.

I asked the movie list through email and they replied me that. However, a little bit different from what is in Asiana website (Korean). The website does not give which movies are available on which routes!! So, unless AVOD, you will be able to access around 6 movies of them. I also will have OZ flight LAX-ICN 772ER, and wonder which movies I can watch.
