Just read in the UA forum that F9 is pulling out of the SFO-LAX market starting this summer. Reported on a conference call yesterday. Yet to see anything in print to actually verify this however...

"in February, Southwest announced it will begin flying into San Francisco. Startup Virgin America also plans to operate out of San Francisco. "

This is a very strong reason to leave. Frontier is doing the right thing - they should focus on protecting their markets in Denver and Mexico!

Yep, sure did. F9 has been pulled out LAX-SFO because UA wins the routes LAX-SFO already. How much longer does F9 will restart non-stop from LAX to other cities. I will thinkable if F9 will have more major changed the routes. IT is already being flies non-stop from LAX-SFO is AS, UA, AA and DL. It was too much competition. I should considers F9 will be ended LAX-SFO.

is it that their like AirTran or is AirTran follwoing them. FL often opens up a new routing only to stop flying it a few months later. EG a ATL-LAX with a stop, its been done via DFW,IND,I think MEM or HOU as well. Or their EWR-MDW

FL keeps most of the non-stops they start up out of ATL or MCO but it starts up a number out of the cities they fly into only to drop them not long after

I liked this quote in the Denver post article:

"We are smart enough and nimble enough not to lose money long term on a route just because of a pride issue."

I agree that F9 admitting defeat - even in a second California market - is a wise move. No point, as the saying goes, of throwing good money after bad.

Yes. After spending $MMs in DEN to get the word out that F9 exists, don't you think that $1M is enough to get word out in CA that F9 flys LAX-SFO? That's really smart and nimble for you.

Actually, they didn't admit defeat, they just dropped the ball.

If you say so.

Good for F9 for giving it a shot, and pulling out when it didn't develop. I had high hopes for a growing California service to develop F9's bottom line, given that even low intra-California fares are quite high on a per-mile basis.

Because we all think we're brilliant...

LAX Part I - FAILED
LAX Part II - FAILED

While Potter and Frontier are getting praise for "getting out" of poor performing markets before the onslaught of losses, why isn't anyone ridiculing him (them) for failing twice at LAX? LAX is a beast. You don't just show up there and watch the money flood. It's a slow building process that requires smarts.
Even before the LAX retreat, I was hesitant about F9 focusing on MEM. Will this be another failed attempt? Aside from birth and a year or two of early childhood, I'm west coast, so I'm not familiar with MEM and it's apparent lack of routes and/or low fares. Maybe F9 will get this one right. I'm optimistic though with the two-time LAX disaster.

yes, mostly pessimistic, but optimistic it might actually work. NW will be happy with the competition. ;)

There's nothing wrong with being optimistic about MEM. MEM is a great airport routing wise but has received little attention because of NW which keeps a stranglehold on the fares and near monopoly. Other than FedEx in the afternoon/evening, there's really no significant traffic at MEM so if Frontier can stand the onslaught of NW, there's a good chance to make a strong foothold.
