Air New Zealand Air Points - Accrueing miles on NZ but not other partners

Recently when checking flights, mostly LAX - AKL, the "ONLINE SPECIAL FARES" is eligible for accrueing Airpoints Dollars but not any other FF program.
To collect miles on partner airlines it's in most cases another US $ 100.00 "VALAUE FARES", each way extra.
It seems that this is a new development.
In this case is it worth it, if flying regularly to or via New Zealand to have an NZ FF account to put all miles in and saving up to $ 200.00 and getting miles vs getting no miles at all if booking the lower fare class?
It seems to be the way to go but wanted to check if there is something I am not understanding or missing.

Last December the cheapest longhaul fares (global saver max) became earning on Airpoints only. The cheapest shorthaul and domestic fares are still non-earning.

More recently, longhaul grab-a-seat fares were excluded from earning.
