I have had a situation come up where I will need a long term rental (Approximately 6 weeks. A month looks like it will run about $760 right now.) from IAD. Does anybody have any great idea or creative ideas. Does Hertz have an amazing cupon? Are there other alternatives. Thanks.

It depends on how creative and willing you are, or is just cheap, cheap, cheap?

The cheapest solution might be Hotwire? With Priceline you can attempt to lowball for a week. When your offer is accepted, you may be allowed to extend the rental at the same rate (that's how the hotels work)

Look at HLE locations if you can get to and from the airport.

If you are a Hertz Gold Member, there is a current special for $75 off a monthly. If not Frequent Flyers and AAA usually have the best discounts.

I just went online to Hertz.com and pulled an AMAZING $435.59 Monthly Rate from IAD. No special codes, just punched in the dates for a month.

Wow! I did the same thing and came up with numbers about $200 higher.
The only numbers I saw that low were cars that couldn't be rented by the month and defaulted to weekly rates in the mid $400s.

I thought I saw a $75 off a monthly coupon recently, let me check.

Yep, it was in my April email:

$75 off Monthly Rentals
Now through June 30, 2007, save $75 on Monthly or Multi-Month PLUS Rentals at participating locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Provide PC# 102126.

Maybe it'll help. Make sure you print it out; this one states in bold text that you have to have a printout at time of rental.

Several times on long rentals I've picked up a car at the airport, and within a few days gone to an HLE and transferred the rental there. Usually you can still drop the car back at the airport, too. That way you have the convenience of picking up the car straight from your flight, but don't pay the horrible airport taxes and fees...

You occasionally run into weird HLE rules (I had to change cars every 3 or 4 weeks, for example, and they could never explain why...)

Keep in mind if relying on your credit card insurance, it normally limits rentals to 28 days. I guess if you sign a new contract every 28 days you're okay.

Most I've seen have language that effectively prohibits doing one after another. Best to get two credit cards and alternate. :)

Amex has a new protection plan that's good for 42 days. You sign up for it in advance, and anytime you charge a rental to the car, they charge you $X (I think 19.99), and it becomes primary coverage.

Hey thanks for the advice all. I had not thought about the HLE option and will think of that now. Really I just need a good coupon that will know a monthly down to in the $400's and I would be happy. I think 7 something is stiff. I have no problem with switching cards out avery few weeks and I'll keep the card swapping in mind. This is just an unusual situation where I will be footing the bill for a 6 week period. There must be some win/win type coupon that will make me and Hertz happy. Oh, I have noticed that other companies are not much cheaper. That surpised me. Thank for the input. I am still open to advice.
