If I were to trade airline miles for starwood points privately. What would be considered to be a fair rate for United or American miles.

Going the other direction, you get 1.25 airline miles per 1 Starwood point (if you trade in blocks of 20,000 points). If you trade in smaller blocks, it's 1 mile per point.

As a private trade, I'd use one of those figures as a starting point.

I would be more inclined to say 2 miles for a Starwood point. Starpoints are 40% more expensive to buy than airline miles and have much greater versatility for use with rooms or transfers to numerous frequent flyer programs.

I can transfer 1 Starpoint to an airline program and extend the validity of my account miles for another three years.

I can book a free award night for 2,000 Starpoints and 2,000 airline miles have very little value.

Maybe take a look at some of the completed trades on Coupon Connection.

The difficulty with this is that while you can see posts that are closed or "completed" its hard to know what the final value was. Often times an OP on CC may accept a lower (or higher) end-trade than the original offer. It's a good general guide, but from someone who trades a lot, I'd say that somewhere between 1.5-2.0 airline miles (depending on program) for every 1.0 SPG points.
