Hello,

My husband and I are going on a 7day sail this summer through the Dodecanese Islands and wondered if anyone had any suggestions of things we have to do in this region of islands. I know the Cyclade Islands are more popular so I wondered if anyone had any info on Dodecanese Islands.

Thanks for your suggestions! I want to make sure this is a wonderful trip!

Hi lmcdltd, and Welcome to FT!

I have been to a few of the Dodecanese islands, so I can offer a few suggestions, though depending on how much time you have on each island, you may have to pick and choose what interests you most.

On Rhodes, the castle and acropolis in Lindos are definitely worth exploring, especially if you're into history. The views from the castle are spectacular, especially if you can catch a sunset there.

There is also a butterfly colony (is that what you call a group of butterflies?) on Rhodes, which is supposed to be cool if you catch them at the right time. When we were there in spring, the butterflies hadn't hatched yet, so there wasn't much to see. Definitely worth researching before you go - I think it's just called the Valley of the Butterflies.

If you don't have a lot of time in Rhodes, you could easily spend the better part of a day just walking around Rhodes town. It's got lots of winding little streets with shops and cafes.

I haven't spent much time on the other islands, apart from a day of eating, drinking, and walking along the water on Kos, but hopefully those Rhodes suggestions give you a place to start.

A lot of it really depends on how much time you have off the boat. If you don't have much, you might want to spend the time enjoying the town in which you dock, rather than rushing around to all the tourist sites.

Yes, but note that Rhodes town is sharply divided between Rhodes Old Town, which is wonderfully atmospheric and worth walking around in, and Rhodes New Town, which is about as atmospheric as Dallas, though the ocean front is pleasant.

Rhodes is very touristed but is one of those places like Venice that is still worth seeing despite the crowds. If at all possible try to stay in the Old Town.

All the other islands in that area have their attractions. Symi is spectacularly beautiful but extremely overtouristed. I've heard good reports about Tilos but never managed to get there.

Are you going to Patmos? My husband and I were there last year. If you're into things Biblical, the cave where John the Divine write the Book of Revelation is on Patmos. It's a small church now and it's a pleasant walk halfway up a mountain. The views are beautiful. Here's a link to our site on our visit to Patmos.

I suggest Rhodes and Lindos

The old town of Rhodes is very beautiful full of shops and restaurants

Lindos is a village with white houses with beautiful sea
