Hi everyone,
I just wanted to know, if I were to book a non-refundable domestic fare, would I get at least the taxes back, in case I don't use the ticket? Any service fees involved? Are both NZ and QF following the same procedures?
Thanks!

I don't think there are any real taxes on purely domestic itineraries, other than GST. I doubt you'll get anything back on a non-refundable ticket.

Well, Qantas lists an AKL-CHC flight (red e-deal) as
Price Breakdown
Fare Charges/taxes Total Price
55.21 + 43.79 for 1 adult = 99.00
While NZ doesn't display the breakdown, I would have assumed the price components are similar.

The 43.79 of "taxes" consists of $11 GST, and $32.79 of phony taxes (eg fuel surcharge - most of it, terrorism insurance levy).
GST definitely non-refundable. As for the others, they aren't real taxes - good luck getting them refunded.
As Kiwi Flyer says, good luck getting them refunded - you'd be able to pay a change fee to use them on another flight, but I've not heard of being able to refund them after ticketing other than trip-in-vain due to weather.
A side grizzle I have about the QF fare you showed is that our Australian travel system always finds QF fares in NZ as the cheapest fares (forcing us to book them), even when they aren't, because of the tax calculation.... fortunately our NZ travel system doesn't do that.

There was something in the news about this a while back - I think you can get your taxes back on non-ref tickets?

I'm pretty sure ntddevsys is correct. The government taxes should definitely be refundable. Don't know whether the fuel surcharge would qualify or not. Best to call NZ and ask to speak to the refunds department.
