People always complain about miles not posting. I am actually watching an unposted flight with some trepidation (I washed the boarding pass - still a little legible though). So which of you have received miles through no fault of your own and did or did you not keep mum about it?

My rationalization (isn't there always one of those tired things?) is that its what the system pays me for all the hassle of getting miles put on, when they were not already.

I've had mileage not deducted for an award that was issued. I've had mileage from partner transfer (25k chunk) that posted twice. Kept mum in both instances. Payback for the hassle of sending in boarding passes for mileage that never posted automatically :p

I have. I did complain but only because the flight miles that posted was for like 3k and I had used a mileage upgrade to upgrade the flight which was 25k. So, yes I did complain. I ended up getting my upgrade back and they never corrected the 3k....well, I tried. :D

I've never (as far as I recall) received totally random unearned miles, but I have received things like class-of-service bonus miles on upgraded economy tickets. This is usually the result of a rebooking error. I rationalize accepting the gift, when I have to, by convincing myself it would cost the airline more (in personnel time) to correct the error than the extra miles are worth.

in the late 90ies LH's miles&more program did offer for Senators (StarGold status) any requested amount of paper vouchers for upgrades on LH flights, the amount due for such upgrade would only be deducted after the flights.

Using such vouchers I noticed that, after check-in with upgraded boarding pass in hand but changing the Frequent Flier program to Mileage Plus afterwards (I did that at the lounges) my miles&more program did loose track of my upgrade voucher and the miles were never deducted.

I did report this bug to my local LH perople in Zurich, but they just answered 'good for you' in didn't care.

I and Gisela from then on did upgrade every flight that way for at least 2 years, until miles&more did get rid of these vouchers and changed the upgrade system for SEN completly.

I am not sure how many other FlyerTalkers did profit from this (I did report this bug on FT's miles&more forum then).

I've gotten unearned miles when rebooked during irregular ops. In one case, it was an international business award ticket that wouldn't ordinarily get miles that was rebooked into a miles-earning class. I didn't say anything; as it was I was getting to my destination a day late so I took it as compensation.

Once flying from the US to BOM on United I began the journey giving my united membership number and at Frankfurt got the lounge agent to change that to SQ. Got miles on both:) . Made up for the time they didnt post miles despite repeated requests for the same routing!

I don't have to travel for a living:) , so I can usually locate my flights/train trips without too much trouble. However in order to aquire as many points as cheaply as possible I charge everything that I can afford to pay off within 30 days (to avoid finance charges). Depending on the CC some purchases are easy to track. Others I have no idea where they come from when the CC company posts with a very generic description.
