ASIANA now joins the same league as Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways for the 5-star airline ranking

Good for OZ. ^ However, I am not sure how much Skytrax rating means. :p MH is also 5-star!?

Wow, you sure are bitter about that :p I've seen you post several times in different threads about it. I do agree with you, though, in terms of hardware: they really are crappy with their old J seat, even their F seats are antique but at least do go flat.
Remember, though, that even an overnight flight in SQ Regional J, which they fly on routes to the Middle East, can be rough. And OZ's service, from what I saw, was hard to top, at least in F. Give them a try in F.

And SQ's Y seat pitch is tiny. Asiana's has two inches more. There are any given number of individual things that each of the 5-star airlines might have which could impede them from getting a 5-star ranking. What Skytrax rates is the overall quality and consistency.
Asiana is right up there. ^

Could not agree more.
The 747 C seat is rubbish, the 747 F seat is antique.

On my last OZ eco flight, I nearly choked. The airflow in the cabin is nonexistent and the cabin had the stench of a 'stale' kitchen.
The IFE on the Airbus heavily blocks the legroom of the window seat.
I only had appalling service from the CS in ICN. Was denied a free hotel night despite being granted one by the fare rules. To my complaint CS answered that I did not make an effort to request it :td: .
While the food is great on OZ, many, many, many things are rotten about this carrier and I certainly will make an effort not to use OZ thoughtlessly in the future.
What Skytrax rates is the overall quality and consistency.

While you have many good arguments - I believe that SkyTrax just hasn't got a clue what they are writing about.

I'm a bit skeptical of the 4 star rating for economy class comfort and 5 stars for service efficiency. I have flown Asiana's 747 Combos TransPac in Y and also Y on enough UAL intercontinental flights, and though I fly E+ I think that UA beats them a little on the 747's and makes Asiana's planes look bad with E+ on the 777's. In terms of efficiency, I generally think that UA has a higher level of service in Y with leaving snacks and such in the galley. I only fly Y and will exclusively fly UA because of the E+ benefits. Also, in terms of seat comfort, once should factor in that Asiana packs Y, but E+ on UAL is used for passengers with status, paid upgraders, and then overflow if necessary.

SQ reginal J only exist on their 772, 772A, and 773, which is a small amount of their aircraft, also used on short to med haul. 772E and 744 has spacebed plus 77W with new seats.
There are only 7 aircraft in OZ has F, and I do wonder how long does F going to last, as you notice, new aircraft that delivered to OZ does not even have F at all, seems like more 747 are also going to convert to 747BCF. I have tried once on F, will never try again unless they have new seats.

From what I have heard on board OZ F last month, OZ will upgrade F seats to similar ones that KE has (new ones). So, F seems to be here to stay on OZ.

Are there plans to update their 747 J seats? I'll be flying OZ from ICN-ORD in the fall so I am curious.

Î would strongly suggest to change your reservation.
(Don't complain afterwards, as I told ya so !;) )
With regards to OZ's F seat: It is in fact ancient as weero stated. I flew in F on OZ from FRA-ICN. The seat leg-rest broke off half way through the flight on one side as I was trying to climb over my seat neighbor (I was on the window in 1K)... Perhaps it was divine intervention telling me to go on a diet though ?:D
I will however state that the food and service on OZ is great, at least in C and F - in line with CX and SQ. The 777's are also ok. The old C seat on these birds is acceptable, the new c seat is very nice indeed.^ AVOD is also good.
I am only bitter about their 747 C seat. I cannot comment on any of the whY class services provided.

Oddly enough - in Y it beats SQ hands down. Large portions, fresh, real choices, and an actualy wine list. Now if they could only install some ventilation to get the food smell out of the cabin after the meal  .

Lucky you! Both my 777s had serious issues with the AVOD. On one I got a bad tilt of the image and the latter also wasn't stable. On the second one, the sync was buggered (just a bit though but enough to be a pain). On the Airbus however, everything was smooth with respect to the IFE.

No garlic on OZ for me yesterday ;) .
And no, a plane is not supposed to retain the odors of its activities - the A330 again was extremely badly ventilated.
Even the cloaud of the perfume of the FAs stayed in the air like the fall out of a nuclear suface test  .

I must be lucky, for while I fly Asiana quite a bit, I've never "nearly choked". Nor has any OZ cabin retained an odor longer than any other airline's cabin I've flown in. Sorry to read about your horrible experiences on Asiana.
I would have certainly ceased flying with them had I encountered these circumstances!

Well that was my impression not a near-factoid.
I found the big problem is the very low level of ac and ventilation. The cabin is hot and not enough fresh air is availble on all the A/C I have flown so far: 747, 777, A330.
And no nozzles!

I do like OZ when I have flown them but I agree with everyones' comments here, well not the F as I have not flown it.
OZ does not deserve the five star rating as long as their 747 retain their current premium seats. Skytrax has been criticized for their rating system and the choice of OZ for 5 re-inforces that. How would a traveller feel towards them and OZ if they choose OZ based on this rating then had the current 747 J or F?
OZ is improving and one day will desrve the rating but not now.
Oh regards to the temperature on OZ aircraft and the lack of vents, that is an airline choice and I had the same problem recently with TG. I had to ask for the temp to be reduced by 2 degrees to avoid me flying naked due to the heat....;)

Good wording - that sums it up pretty much.
The food and the lounges are fine, so is the AVOD on the Airbus.

UA, SQ, or LH often are to warmish as well. But the nozzles solve any need for personal cooling and need for more fresh air. So not to have them is an original sin.
