Welcome to Flyertalk.

This coupon has helped knock a few dollars off my rental these past few times:

AAA would help you get a discount, but if you are only joining AAA for the Hertz discount and not the other benefits (maps, guides, roadside assistance etc.) I would use a frequent flyer account to get a disount. It's free to join frequent flyer programs and you can often get a good discount. I once got a free day on a full size SUV (with a 2-day rental) by using an Air Canada code. I do not fly them, but figured giving up my name and address was worth the $60 savings.

AAA discounts usually run anywhere from 10 - 20%, airline discounts start around 5%, but I've seen as high as 25%.

Other discounts are available through BJ's, Costco, AARP, possibly any museum you may belong to.

I don't believe you get better rates by joining #1 Club Gold (though you're more apt to get a free upgrade).

Bottom line, there are plenty of free ways to get discounts, don't join AAA just for the discount.
