Zoom to launch cut-price Gatwick to New York flights

NewyorkcentralparkalamyZoom Airlines is to begin daily flights between London Gatwick and New York John F Kennedy (JFK) in June, with tickets priced from £129 one-way (including taxes and charges).

Beginning on June 21, the flights promise to usher in a new era of budget transatlantic travel. Ottowa-based airline Zoom’s cheaper tickets will provide an alternative to BA and Virgin Atlantic, who "have been fleecing passengers for too long".

Flights will operate from Gatwick's South Terminal, leaving every lunchtime and arriving at JFK's Terminal 4 in the early afternoon. Return flights will leave the Big Apple in the early evening, arriving back in Gatwick at around 6am the next day.

Five flights per week will operate direct to New York, with two off-peak services operating via Bermuda.

Zoom is promising year-round low fares, flexibility of travel, no restrictions such as the need to stay a Saturday night, and an affordable premium economy class. Tickets can be booked at www.flyzoom.com or by phoning 0870 240 0555.

Zoom's John Boyle said: "You cannot put a sheaf of paper between the prices charged by BA, Virgin and the American carriers on the New York route and it is high time that passengers had a better deal. We are offering savings of up to 70 per cent on these flights."

The company is also planning to begin services from Gatwick to Canada and Bermuda.

£129 each way is hardly a bargain when for £3 more each way you can fly Delta on their lowest economy fare and get miles.

In todays royal gazette (local newspaper in Bermuda):

Is stated "Zoom airlines is offering a round-trip for $498 including taxes, fees and charges - a saving of up to 73 percent compared to BA"

"From June 8 a temporary schedule will run between Bermuda and London Gatwick on Mondays and Fridays. The regular schedule begins on June 23 when flights will depart from Bermuda to Gatwick on Thuesday and Saterday evenings and from Gatwick to the island on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. The boeing 767-300ER aircraft has 266 seats of which 84 are premium economy and 182 economy. "

"Managing director Jonathan Hinkles said We have been looking at areas we can bring benefits to the market because they are under-served or suffer from high fares. we thought Bermuda fits the bill."

BA spokeswoman Sallie Singleton said : "We are watching the competition and we will respond vigorously to any competion"

Must say for the people staying in Bermuda this is a very welcome change and we will watch the price war with interest. In the past it was cheaper flying to JFK and then to London Heatrow than Bermuda-Gatwick. A lot of students attends school in the UK and there are a lot of busnisses that use this route.^ ^ ^
