Hello,
anyone can suggest what would be the cheapest car rental in Italy? In my research currently I have found http://it.rent.it which asks 378 euro for 15 days for a Grande Punto in Venice. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

The best deal I could find is through Sixt Holiday Car rentals. The Holiday Car division offers zero liability deals when you pay in advance. I found that there were some other companies that were a little cheaper (not by much), but I liked Sixt's up front pricing and their zero liability policy.

But don't expect any real "deals". Renting a car in Italy is crazy-expensive. For the amount I'm paying for an econo-box for 2 weeks I could rent a premium car from Hertz in the US.

Sixt also offers Holiday Cars that have Sixt ads painted on them (Sixti)........these cars are less expensive then the non ad branded cars. But I was concerned about security...........last thing I want to do is let everyone know I'm a tourist.

Do you think OP will take your absolutely accurate observation to heart??

Nope...Americans are addicted to cars.

BTW the fuel in Italy is crazy expensive too.

I don't know if it is the cheapest- but autoeurope.com offers some good deals as they typically include full coverage in case of damage. This is a bonus- as many credit card and other policies do not cover Italy specifically.
Enjoy your trip!

If bypassing the rental car counter were an option, I'd do it.

But I don't get to Europe often, so when I do I want to see as much as I can. This is an impossible task when you're in a train that you can't stop.

Cars = freedom. I can go where I want, whenever I want. Trains are for commuters.

Thanks for proving my point.

BTW you're dead wrong about trains in Europe.

Sometimes http://www.holidayautos.com has good deals.

If your flying into Treviso Airport, you could book a sixti car. 15 days are available from less than 200€ for a Fiat Panda (5 doors). However, they have a km limit, so you might take that into your calculation. I wouldn't care much about the signs on the car. Sooner or later you will be recognized as tourist anyway (signs you wouldn't think of, like which parking spot you've chosen etc). After all, Italy isn't that bad in terms of safety, especially the North.

If you say so. But I have pictures and memories from my last trip that would have been missed completely without my car.

One of my best days ever was getting lost in South Tyrol. Would have been a shame to miss that.

May also want to dig around ye old "NYC - VCE $143" thread...
When I was there a couple years ago, I recall booking thru Altalia or Atalia tours web site? Can't remember exactly, but the car came from Avis VCE and was a Jetta Wagon. Perfect for the 4 of us w/luggage and our jaunt down to Florence. Worked out extremley cheap for EU. Anything else close was about 2-3 times the price. Sorry I can't remember more details...Lots of vino on that trip!:D
