So I have a Nokia E60 when migrating from a Nokia 6230.
How the @$%^*#$^*^#$%*#$ do people keep track of their contacts when traveling?
1) Do you keep all your contacts on your main SIM (and then lose the functionality of multiple numbers per person - home / office / mobile / etc) when you put in your foreign sim card
or
2) Keep all your contacts in the phone and pray to heaven that you don't lose that phone and keep nothing on your local sim
and and
3) How the fffffff'en do you keep the SIM contacts sync'ed if you can't store the multiple numbers between your phone and the one number holding SIM.
4) Do you ACTUALLY take your phone cable with you just in case you lose your phone and need to restore your backup from the computer?
5) uhh...should i just leave the questions of trying to sync with Outlook or ACT or Palm to another post?

A few thoughts:
1. If one of your phones doesn't have the functionality you need, buy different equipment.
2. I don't lose my phone but still keep my contacts backed up so that I can transfer the contacts to a new phone or SIM when I change equipment.
3. Calm down. No need to freak out!
Sadly I can't comment on the Nokia, but I use an exchange server and just sync them all.
The 6230 does support SyncML so perhaps you could look into a remote backup service?

I used to think that it was best to carry my contacts with the sim onto various phones.
Now, I just keep the master file on the phone(s) and swap the sims in and out.
All of my entries follow the +Country_Code-Area_Code-Local_Number format so they all work everywhere.
BTW, it is quite easy to copy all directory listings from phone to sim or sim to phone with Nokia's copy function that is on all of their GSM phones. This has been Nokia GSM phones since the beginning. Using this technique, I was able to consolidate the contents of various sims with very little effort.

I've had serveral Nokias (usually series60/Symbian) and the only way that works for me is syncing. I store all numbers with +COUNTRY CODE so they'll work anywhere and with every SIM-card out there. The easiest way for me is to either i) sync over-the-air with Exchange or ii) sync with Outlook using the built-in bluetooth on my laptop.
My last phone (E61i, how I miss my baby :() got stolen on the bus and all I had to do with my new device was to sync with Outlook and boom, everything was back again. But! Be sure to backup your data using the Nokia manager software, or by using the built-in backup capabilities in Outlook. ^

I have a Nokia E61 (missed it by THAT much) :)
Install PC suite on PC, and nominate Outlook as your Contact manager
Synch with PC and phone either by IR, USB cable, or Bluetooth
Life is simple
Even if you use Outlook for nothing else, it provides the backup you need should you lose the 'phone. Don't use SIM for contacts, and make sure you enter all numbers as + (country code) (area code with 0 removed) (number).
Dead easy.

Use Nokia's free software to sync with outlook on my PC via IR or Bluetooth (depending on which PC I'm syncing to). If I lose or break the phone, just re-sync to my new one. No worries.
Also very useful because I can EDIT the contacts in Outlook, instead of trying to key in names, addresses, etc thru the phone keypad.

I have all my phones syncronized to Outlook on my laptop - never had a problem - all contacts are saved with country code.

Exactly - this IMO is the only way to go. And backup/sync to Outlook all the time. But locating numbers on SIMS is not good.
