Good day everyone...
I am a happy owner of a Treo 600. It has served me well for a couple of years, but now I am ready for a new device. I wanted to stay loyal to the Treo, but am not really convinced of the Treo 750. Is there a way to avoid Windows on a mobile device? I love Palm OS but realize that it is outdated now. I do not have any experience with Symbian. Here is what I am looking for:
- tri or four band GSM
- WiFi
- qwerty keyboard plus touchscreen
- hardware switch to turn silent (like the Treo has)
- option to add GPS
- do not need camera or MP3
- excellent addressbook and calendar apps, easy sync with Outlook
- email app that supports IMAP/SSL (currently using Snapper)
- decent web browser
- good SMS app
- wide variety of 3rd party applications
I do not use my Treo as a phone so much as for email, SMS and some organizer functions. And I am not concerned about size.
So far I started to think about Sony Ericsson P990i, Treo 750 and Nokia N91.
Any hints for other models that I should look at are much appreciated...
Thanks!

Sony Ericsson P990i is an amazing device - though I find myself using my old P910a on trips when 3G and WiFi aren't required. There is an excellent selection of programs that run on Symbian OS. Not sure about addition of GPS unless it is via BlueTooth or something. With the feature set you've listed, I'd be interested in finding a device that includes them all as well.

You could look at the Treo 680 or 700 to stay with the Palm OS, but I'd also give the 750, even with Windows Mobile, a look for its e-mail capabilities and 3G high-speed data. But Cingular's 3G coverage right now is very limited in the US.
And wi-fi will be a problem if you stick with Treo.
Thanks for the link to the PDA db, quite useful!
If I can get myself used to Windows mobile, I seem to have a lot more options.
i-mate Ultimate 7150 (coming out later this year) looks interesting, that is if it really is a convertible...
Will keep looking.

The P990i is great for use in Europe, but the lack of 3G on GSM850 means its pretty useless in the US, especially since it doesn't even support EDGE.
Using it in the US would mean you are limited to T-mobile on GPRS speeds.

Why the Nokia N91? It's a nice device, but it doesn't seem to meet your form factor requirements!
I still use my Treo 600 when traveling, great for picking up emails, phone with my home number and address book, etc. Two friends have both bought the Dash and luv it, but it is windows based :(
Has pretty much everything you listed, only missing is not 3G or UMTS so won't work in Japan or Korea. Otherwise, it is slim, great feel in your hand, sweet......

Having used Palms for years, since the first one came out, if you want it to sync with Outlook I think the Windows Mobile is better. You didnt say which email but if it is Exchange based I dont think there is a reasonable alternative to Windows Mobile unless you have other software on the server side. Bottom line for me after trying to use the others is that Windows Mobile is pretty much superior to the other platforms for what you want to do. I keep trying Symbian, and I keep walking away saying why would anyone use this crap?
Also, I liked the Outlook email in Windows Mobile much, much, much better than Snapper mail. Depending on form factor you might want to look at HTC products. I have a Treo 700w which I like, and love the form factor, and an HTC TyTN. The HTC has a lot more features and a better processor and is noticeably faster. However, the Treo 750 is likely a step up from the 700w as well.
Thanks again for all the suggestions!
The HTC TyTN looks most interesting to me now. I read great reviews and the worldwide highspeed connectivity is impressive. Will probably settle on this one.

What about Nokia E61i or E61? It meets almost all your requirements except touchscreen - and it's way more stable than Windows Mobile based devices. The battery life is also amazing, I've heard about ppl using it for 5 days without charging - and we're talking about heavy use and a lot of push mailing. :)
Besides, they are like 14mm thick - like having a big RAZR in your pocket. ;)

Did you decide on one? Interested in which you chose - and how you like it. Let us know!

5 days? You're dreaming. :)
More like 3 :) - and that's coz I use it as an OGG player, Skype, GPS while travelling etc etc etc
(I say this in jest as I went from a Treo 600 which usually just lasted out the day to an iMate KJAM which didn't even make 1 day without searching for a charger, to the Nokia E61 which seems to be solar-powered)

I realize this is a revived thread (so the OP may have picked up a new phone already) but I'd echo the 750 if you're a fan of the Treo formfactor. It has pretty much everything you're asking for except WiFi.
Palm's threaded SMS app is a big plus if you do a lot of texting.
The 680 shares the 750 form factor and runs PalmOS instead of Windows Mobile, but it isn't 3G (which is a big negative for me).
Having used both quite a bit, I'd choose the 750 over the 680.
