Great game from the mid 90s. Can you still get the old version or is there a new version out?

Yep, I remember it along with railroad tycoon and a few others, its been long gone afaik but probably downloadable somewhere in cyberspace. Dunno if it would run in xp or vista although it might in compatibility mode.

The original is available for free here. (http://www.2kgames.com/railroads/railroads.html) It is under the "downloads" section.

The OpenTTD project aims to build a Transport Tycoon clone that is bigger and better than the original, and it is! No problem with XP for this and they are working on new graphics, better AI etc.

A buddy of mine and I used to play the board game for hours - we had rule extensions, etc, etc.
And, yes, we knew all about girls. Or thought we did. :-)

I tried it, I didn't like it. It was too much of a hassle to squeeze things into the space available, trains kept waiting on other trains that needed to cross their path. They want pretty graphics and they get the scale all wrong on all of these games. It gets worse and worse as the genre continues.
How to fix Transport Tycoon: Stack the rails in the same square, ignore other trains not on your track. It should be a game about logistics, not about how to avoid spurious traffic jams.

A new version of Transport Tycoon was released by Atari for the PC under the name of Locomotion around 3 years ago.
It is almost identical to the original Transport Tycoon except better as it includes updated vehicles etc if I remember correctly!

Hope this helps

Where can I find the original data files? I can't seem to find them on the website.
This looks like a cool game!

WOW! I didn't know that it continues to draw an attentive group of people! I tried downloading the original version from ScottC's link, but can't get it to work on my XP machine - don't even want to try my Vista laptop.
Where can one find TTD?

You can obtain the actual Transport Tycoon Deluxe game here at The Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=1631). Then you can either pull the data files out of the package, or if you don't know how to do that you can actually install the game to get the data files and move them over to your OpenTTD data directory.

I've been playing OpenTTD since this post was made last week, and I enjoy it.

I hope my earlier post does not wreck Flyertalker's careers! OpenTTD allows more vehicles etc than the original, and on a modern PC it is very playable.
The original author of Transport Tycoon has a website

OpenTTD works VERY well on a Mac too (Both Intel and PowerPC)...
Ideal when you're over the Atlantic, and you get looks for a Airline and Train service being run.
Remember if you do download the original TTD files from a site, although its "abadonware", it is still licenced software, and you do need a licence for the data files (its life I'm afraid). So it could be time to raid fleabay...
Luckly I have my Orignal TT floppy disks around still ;)
Enjoy - its a bleeding good romp!

Indeed. I'm running it fine on my iBook G4 1.2 GHz. The only negative is that the right-click scrolling around the screen takes dexterity to accomplish on the Mac.
