I was just pricing out a trip from SMF to FLL on October 26, 2007 (for a cruise)
Here's what I got...

SMF to FLL via LGB is $304.00 plus taxes and fees
on flight 265 and 243

SMF to LGB on flight 265 is $89.00 plus taxes and fees
LGB to FLL on flight 243 is $154.00 plus taxes and fees
so if you book it as 2 trips instead of 1, it cost $243.

Basically if you booked SMF to FLL via LGB as one one way trip, it will cost you $61. If you book SMF to LGB than LGB to FLL, you save $61 plus you get more trueblue points! Save money, earn more points, book 2 trips. :)

Now if your doing award flights, thats a different story...
SMF to FLL via LGB is not avaliable on that date, but it is for other dates... if you do SMF to LGB than LGB to FLL... than you can book it, but it'll use 2 truepasses instead of 1.

Definitely save money and earn more points by booking as separate flights - but be aware that you'll have to reclaim checked bags at the connecting airport and recheck them yourself.

B6 won't send bags to a final destination even when solely on their own tickets?

I've done it with other airlines and its not a problem to get computer generated tags that effectively joins two tickets.

I would think if push comes to shove JetBlue personnel could handwrite a bag tag with the final destination.

Yeah that seems weird to me.

I did it a few time, never saved that much money, but every time they checked my bags onto the other flight except once out of FLL.

I guess they can send it through to the final destination - I've never done this before, so sorry if I was wrong.
