(SINGAPORE) A group of high-profile businessmen and professionals are threatening to launch a class-action suit against Singapore Airlines over its plan to scrap life membership of its top-tier Solitaire Priority Passenger Services (PPS) Club.

Some of the aggrieved customers are close to gaining enough points for life membership of the club and feel 'cheated' at being deprived.

'Life membership is much sought-after and has an intrinsic value,' said a former banker who is party to the lawsuit plan. 'In fact, it even featured in a recent divorce case where the wife wanted the membership as part of the settlement terms.

While I guess SQ can technically win this one because of the clause, I definitely see where the people are coming from. The loyalty which people have given the airline in hopes of the lifetime status is now gone, which definitely is not good.:(

A surprising development not expected in this part of the world. Agreed technically SQ has the rights. I am not so sure on the moral side though.

I wondered if the party is trying to air its grievances publicly to let SQ knows that they should be taken seriously. Hope SQ take this development seriously as these folks have not only spending power but many may have the influence on the direction of travel expenditures in their companies.

I'll bet the following will be the outcome of this case:
There will be an out of court settlement between both the parties and SIA decides to make a "one time exception" for the 'aggrieved customers'
SIA: gets bad press
Customers: loose time and money.
Lawyers: Win-win.

I would love to be part of this class action. Any ideas on when, where and how? :)

Ah, another anti-lawyer post. Well, how do you know lawyers are being paid anything in this case? Might one of the plaintiffs be doing this pro bono for the class? And without the lawyers, how might the aggrieved customers have achieved a positive result on their own? Wouldn't SQ just have gotten away with a unilateral change in its conditions?

Yes, let's blame it on the lawyers. Very original!

It probably will get away with changing its conditions...nevertheless a little bad press caused by the suit won't hurt.
