Ok... so I'm relocating to Edinburgh in about oh 29 days :D
And it's been about 11 years since I lived there - and I was a poor student then anyway.
Having been a country lass for the last 8 years or so, I'm looking forward to being able to get take away delivered. Bliss! (Simple things, simple minds, I know :))
So can the Edinburgh residents point me in the way of where the best take-away Italian/pizza, chinese and Indian is - and which ones deliver? I already know L'Alba d'oro in Canonmills does the best fish and chips, even if it is only for nostalgia's sake ;)

Teachers?! Cooking whisky
Anyway, so long as I get Clubcard points on wine deliveries, why should I go to an offie? ;)

L'Alba d'Oro does not only do fish and chips. When I was there last year, they were doing deep fried haggis. (Just the thought makes my arteries clog!) He used to do Crocodile but I think the price got too high. L'Alba d'Oro does not do the deep fried mars bar as he does not think it works with the batter.

What an abuse of one of Slough's most famous products.

Oh yes, in a Scottish fish and chip shop, you should get a weird and wonderful selection. Haggis supper is my preferred meal, but I also quite like Scotch pie supper (so long as the pie is similarly deep fried) - but the quality of a lot of pies is pants, and by the time you've picked out all the bits of artery, you really don't want to eat it any more! Deep fried macaroni pie or pizza are generally other options, and taste much better than they sound ;)

There used to be a really nice Neapalese takeup down towards Leith - walking distance from town. Think it was called the Gurka or some such thing. Dunno if you know but theres are really good farmers market on a Saturday on the top of the parking garage near the back end of the castle - Castle Ter? Ah, its the garage near Kings Stable Road. Good cheese and stuff.

Ahmed's on Newhaven Road is the current favourite of the bounty household. Sitara Spice in Stockbridge is another goodie, as is the Raj's takeaway outfit - Curry in a Hurry. They do a good deal for two people for £14.95 including a couple of beers.
The Labrador is still about the pick of the best of chippies, nothing like a squid supper. I haven't been to their new posh bit next door yet. The place at the top of Broughton St is good as well.
Ricebox (top of Easter Road) or the the Wok Inn (Newhaven) for Chinese delivery. Or there's another place on Elm row (name escapes me) that's good for delivery as well.
We just use the large chains if we are ever getting delivery pizza, but the place at the top of Goldenacre is pretty good.
We do mainly cook at home (I can give you names of butchers, fishmongers etc., as well!!!), but I'm getting a bit peckish now... :p
Jenbel, do you know what part of town you are going to live in?

ooh butchers etc would be great. Down here I have a network of organic farms and proper butchers I mosey around before hitting Tescos for the staples - and as a result I won't eat supermarket meat any more! I was quite :( at having to find these things all over again. (In fact, enjoying a ham and lentil soup, made with an organic smoked ham shank I got at Perth farmers market - and it's fab :)) And thanks to TIMP for the farmers market tip as well. Think I know which garage you mean :)
I'll be living just off Leith Links - in a new development. Agent has just told me I've passed the vetting checks :) I've still to break it to Sheep it isn't a penthouse :o

ah, a single digit postcode; jolly good. Welcome to the neighbourhood :)
I'm just along the road, in Newhaven. North Edinburgh is a bit of a desert for decent suppliers, so we go to Bower's in Stockbridge for meat. Mark is the owner - very helpful fellow. Armstrong's across the road for fish. Tattie Shaw's at the top of Leith Walk, or Mr. Akram's in Stocky for veg, or you could try one of the box schemes. I'm not mad on them as there's only so much beetroot and mystery greens that I'll eat.
The market is on every Saturday - it's a bit expensive, but I sometimes pop up for the German bakery. Their premises are otherwise in far and distant Bruntsfield. If you can't be bothered heading up there, sit tight until June - most of the producers there tend to decamp to the Links for the weekend(s) of the Leith Festival.
Your local supermarket is now the Co-op at the Foot of the Walk, so ditch your Clubcard for a Divi! Oh, and Lidl in the Kirkgate is being remodelled :p You can get a Sunny Leith t-shirt (de rigeur in EH6) in the wee newsagents opposite Woolworths. The Kirkgate is also home of the riskiest meal in Edinburgh - a quarter pounder from the portable grill of a mad Polish guy. Delicious :D

Thank you!
But I think you'll find my new supermarket is Tesco on Broughton Road - which incidentally was the one I used when at University - when it was still a Wm Low ;) And will make sense - leisurely drive to Stockbridge, pick up meat etc.. back to Broughton St and then home again :) All I need is a nice luncheon spot in Stockbridge ;)

An interesting thread to one who was at university in Edinburgh alas too long ago.
There was a "chippie" on Broughton Street, and a dour one on Rose Street, and that was pretty much it (we were equidistant between the two). What a different city then.
Walking down The Mound one wintry February Sunday evening we encountered three possibly Scandinavian naval officers, in uniform, looking around bewildered. They asked us "where is the city centre please". We said "this is it" and they looked amazed. There was nothing open at all. Turned out they had come up in a taxi from Leith docks, asked for the city centre, been put out in Princes Street, and thought they had been stitched up !
Is the Co-op really still in business up there ? Gosh !

Scotmid (the Co-op) was legendary when I was a student - and my mother was amazed at seeing me fall into raptures about it that it still existed when we drove past the Leith branch :D

If that happened nowadays you would just assume they were on a stag night and point them in the direction of the Cowgate/Grassmarket.
Jenbel your chosen Tesco is, unfortunately, the default store for all home deliveries in EH7, EH1 and EH8. You will come to find that they run out of everything, so make sure your subsitutions are chosen carefully.
Of course, now that you have your own personal bus route (http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk/timetables/r35.pdf) to the airport you can get rid of the car completely ;)

What an excellent bus service .... one and a half hours from Edinburgh Airport to Leith
Alas my recollection extends back to when the Co-op was called St Cuthberts. What a silly name. By the way, they still delivered milk by horse and cart well into the 1980s.
Speaking of Stockbridge I heard there used to be a nice Gentleman's Lunch Club in Danube Street.

Another Nepalese place is the Khukuri near Haymarket - they delivered my supper to the Hilton every night for three weeks, and I gained ten pounds.
Not carry out in the traditional Scottish sense  , but somewhere else that just struck me is Appetite by Rowlands on Howe Street - it's a (very) wee deli that does amazing pizza, quiche, salads and takeaway meals. The menu changes everyday but the meals usually include a couple of currys, a casserole or two and a fishy dishy. We often pick up lunch there after doing the shopping in Stocky and eat it out in the car. Lunchtimes only I think.
The German bakery I mentioned up ^^^ there got an award and a write up in the Observer (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/foodmonthly/story/0,,2039062,00.html) last weekend. It's truly great, but nearer to home for you will be the Sicilian bakery on Albert St, just off the Walk.
