I would need to take the direct flight from EWR - DUS but am travelling on an Eco ticket. Is it possible to book this flight when I upgrade with miles (the galileo shows availability in Y) or will I have to route via FRA. The outbound is via VIE to JFK on OS.

You shouldn´t need to upgrade using your miles if you´re travelling on Y fare. The flight is bookable in economy, if only in the unrestricted Y class.

But of course this is unrestricted Y, which is probably just some bucks cheaper than the C fare...
I don't think that your strategy will work. I assume that you want to book a discounted eco ticket and then upgrade. But you can't get discounted eco for DUS-EWR.
Other possibility is to book FRA-EWR in eco, upgrade it and then ask for rebooking it into DUS-EWR. This might work with a rebooking fee. To be shure you should ask LH if they are willing to do that...

ralfkrippner: your suggestion is most appealing - have you checked whether it works ???
I think the published Y fare for the DUSEWR service is there only for upgrade purposes, you can not pay it and fly that service: I was told by my TA that if you want to upgrade to that DUSEWR service, you must pay that published expensive Y fare (which for European residents is a bad deal: RT uprades require 70,000 miles plus the expensive base ticket, while you get the Business Class Award flight for 105,000 miles and SEN can bring a companion for another 52,500 miles).
Has anybody experiences how the DUSEWR Business service scores compared to regular LH Intercontinental Business Class ? Thanks. </font>

That's steep! I guess that Y fare is over 2.000€...? Who will do that...
No I did not try that. But I guess it MIGHT work with a rebooking. Maybe you can even buy DUS-FRA-EWR, upgrade it and than ask to be rebooked on the direct one?

The Infoflyway quotes 2721 EUR + tax for DUS-EWR-DUS in "Economy Class Flexible".
"Business Class Flexible" is 3267 EUR + tax.
