Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap, clean, hostel?

Avoid hostels. In Nov 2005, there were 2 hostels in town, and they both sucked. Read the reviews

I stayed at one hostel 1 1/2 yr ago, because the reviews at Ostello Piero Rotta were so bad. My cell phone was stolen. I was using it as an alarm because I lost my watch, and someone reached over me as I was sleeping, and stole the phone. I woke up & rushed out of the room, but didn't see the person. I've stayed at 40-50 hostels in Europe, US, South America, and Asia, and this was my worst experience. The people staying there were dodgy. The actual facilities weren't bad. There's was a kitchen. The beds were solid. Lockers for your stuff.

....I don't think my hostel was "Il Postello" though. My hostel may have closed. It was upstairs in a building up a stairway from a parking lot, and all the "Il Postello" reviews are after Nov 2005.

The "Il Postello" reviews don't look so hot...

I don't know why hostels in Milan have such dodgy reviews. All the other places in Italy I've been are wonderful, and have lots of good hostels.

Hostelz.com and hostels.com list some inexpensive hotels you might try.
My suggestion for Milan would be to spend more money.

i did hotwire and was more than happy with the hotel, a best western like 10 min away from the city center by tram... it was around $50 for two.
