What is the best and easiest way to get from Union Station to DIA?
I'll be arriving by train, for a week or so, and thought that car rentals may be more available and cheaper at DIA than at Union Station. Is there anywhere downtown that I could get a rental? IIRC, the only one I know of is Hertz.
Although a few years ago, in SLC, I arrived by train and had a reservation with (IIRC) Alamo. While waiting at the airport for them to open, the Hertz agent offered me a car. I thought it was reasonable, since it was about the same price as Alamo, since Hertz offered to reimburse the cab fare. But then I realized that it was for one day! (My Alamo rental was for two days!)

What is the best and easiest way to get from Union Station to DIA? What I would do is walk from Union Station to the Market Square bus station. It's about two blocks away. From there you can take the RTD (http://www.rtd-denver.com/) skyRide to DEN (a.k.a. DIA). You'll want to take the AF. I believe the fare is $8 and it'll take about an hour.
I'm not sure if you'd really want to rent a car at DEN, but I don't know where any other car rental agency is. I do, however, know how to get from Union Station to DEN! :)

I believe there is a large Airport tax in DEN on rental cars, I rode a shuttle to the city from the airport one time with a couple that were going to Vail. They reserved a car in the city for I believe $20 less per day. I would call around if I were you.

Take the (free) 16th Street Mall from Union Station to Glenarm. Go north on Glenarm about three blocks. You will see a very large Avis station.
It also looks like Hertz will pick you up (after you call them) from the train station and take you to their rental office at 20th & Welton.

Thanks! ^
Funny think about Hertz is that the office is open from 7 AM to 6 PM. The morning is semi OK, as the train departs at 8 AM. However, the eastbound (assuming it is ontime) arrives at 7 PM - an hour after the location closes!

If you are planning on staying downtown or in the metro area - I wouldn't rent a car. There is transit up and down Denver, and the new metro rail system can take you as far south as Park Meadows.
However, if your needs require you to rent a car - do try to stay away from DIA. Their prices are much higher than 'off site' locations. Plus you loose alot of time having to go all the way out to DIA.

Before you get there, I'd try some of the travel websites (expedia, travelocity, orbitz, and any of the excellent sites you can be linked to right here thru FlyerTalk) and see what you come up with.
IME, DEN is expensive for car rentals (as others here have noted) and walk-ups get taken for even more money versus folks with an existing reservation.
Good luck!

More like "down". Light rail only runs south of Denver.
On another note, be warned that there is limited access to Park Meadows from the County Line Light Rail station. There is a shuttle bus that runs on the weekends only; the pedestrian bridge won't be complete until mid-2008.
