Asiana Club - Avod?? Syd-icn-lhr
Hi All,
I've been an avid reader of these forums for quite sometime and have just recently booked OZ tickets based on reviews here in these forums.
I have a quick question though in regards to AVOD systems on these flight routes.
It's my understanding that it's a 50-50 chance to get a more modern aircraft between SYD-ICN & ICI-LHR and returning flights with AVOD systems onboard. Is this correct? Does anyone know what chance mid-week flights have with these systems onboard verse those weekend flights.
If no AVOD system in installed, what entertainment system is available? Should I pack a few very good books or maybe splurge and spend my money on a Video iPod?
Thanks!

Almost no chance to get AVOD on both SYD-ICN and ICN-LHR, regardless of any time on a week. On ICN-LHR, new J seats are installed, but still no AVOD.
Instead, all Asiana's 777s have PTV on all classes. Around 6 movies and several programs are available. However, it is said in this forum that the contests are not that good.

And to/from SYD you usually get the armchair seats. Same IFE, 6 films or so, plus games etc. To my mind the armchairs are more comfortable than the new J.

PTV on Asiana is very difficult to schedule your movies...
For ICN-NYC flight I always endup watching 2~3 movies
While on Koreanair with AVOD, 4~5...
I wonder why they don't support AVOD on NEW seats:confused:
OZ only has two 777s with AVOD. They are normally scheduled for ICN-SEA and ICN-SFO flights.

PTV on Asiana's 747 is really "strange". All channels change contents like TV. However on 777, there are more like normal PTVs. (One fixed movie goes on and on on each channel.)

Are they current movies? I'd had to see repeats of roger rabbit or terminator . . .

Hi I'm flying with kids, in Bus class . is there a seperate screen per person in Bus? or is it a big one screen does all?
Also what's the cocoon beds thing spoke about on Asiana site? it says they're available on the LHR-ICN leg, is this now or pending? In general how good is Bus class in Asiana? What Lounge do you use in Heathrow?
Lot's of questions I know, but with kids it pay's to plan ahead...
Thanks

C class of Asiana's 777s have personal tv monitor for every seat, which means separate screen per seat. Cocoon seat is angled lie flat seat, approximately 170 degree, and it is currently available on ICN-LHR sector. On ICN-SYD, old style seat is available, but this is also good. How good C class of Asiana... I can't answer this since I've never experienced OZ's C class. At LHR airport, OZ uses diamond club lounge at pier 3, near gate 14... I heard this means BMI lounge, but I'm not sure.

Thanks BobbyBrown,
Much appreciated. Any idea why Asiana Bus is so much cheaper than rivals?
It's about 30% of the BA equal...!!

I ended up on one of them 2 days ago.
Why is the image quality so much worse than on the A330? I flew Biz on the 777 and coach on the 330 and the movie system on the 330 worked infinitely better.
Only really bad thing was that about every 2 hours an FA pushed some buttons in the IFE rack and all movies jumped elsewhere and we had to find them again. Crew was not approachable for my comment not to do this again  .

Not perceived as a premium product here, I guess.
I have no complaints about any of it- my business partner thought the appetiser was the meal, and was pleasantly surprised that so much more came along afterwards. You don't face backwards (cf BA) and on way back to SYD you do most of your timezones in your first 10 hour flight from LHR, giving you the next flight to sleep north-south.
And,you get an overnight at SEL from SYD, of course
Had another unpleasant experience with OZ IFE on the A330 yesterday.
While I appreciate that unlike on SQ, LH, or UA the volume of the OZ IFE can be revved up to audible levels, the max volume setting is beyond any reason (one needs about a 15% setting for perfect hearing during take off).
Yesterday, they managed to boot the 330 IFE at full volume. And a large portion of the passengers - obviously only ever having seen a plane in picture books and movies - did not succeed in adjusting the volume. Instead hordes of pax held their headphones about 1/2 a meter from their faces to keep the volume at bearable levels. The whole plane sounded like a mixture between battlefield and Disneyland for about 2 hours until most travellers found a way to muffle their audio.
It was extremely disturbing even through earplugs plus noise canceleation headphones. When I complained to an FA about the situation, she claimed that she would not understand me and ran off. Sadly enough, this was believable.
The screaming and shooting was only interrupted by the extended sermons/monologues anyone aboard OZ with a uniform is allowed to hold. First time in my life, I enjoyed the about 5x15 minutes announcements that the duty free shop will be closing shortly before landing (still 5 hours to go then), as my earphones and iPod could override those  .
