I am flying to Hong Kong in May with a group. My ticket was booked in class V on CX. I was wondering how much or what it takes to upgrade to Business. Currently I am exec plat on AA. Will this status help me in terms of standby for the upgrade?

FYI, V class earns only Asiamiles. You could either upgrade with asiamiles (not AA miles) or by cash at the airport. There are reports from FTers that LAX and YVR have fixed fee paid upgrade Y to J for about $1500 oneway. You can do a search for more info.
Alternatively, wait for the op-up god to look upon you;)

"V" class does earn mileage with Alaska's MVP though.
But CX has a strict protocol for upgrades.. and when travelling in a group, your chances are much lower than when travelling alone..
But even so, CX will not upgrade you unless the flight is oversold in economy.
Do a search on this forum. There are no less than 400 posts on the word "Upgrade" alone!

Alternatively, wait for the op-up god to look upon you;)Probably the truth.
OP doesn't tell us what flight or from what city. Or if he has flown with CX in the past. I'm Plat with AA but have flown a lot with CX - they 'take care of me' quite a bit. Of course not knowing everyone onboard and their status one never knows why one gets that 'nice surprise' at check-in or at the gate...

...I was wondering how much or what it takes to upgrade to Business. ...It sounds like the OP is asking about paid upgrades, in which case there are 2 choices (possibly 3 for some routes):
- Asiamiles upgrade (award)
- pay fare difference (expensive)
- certain routes have paid upgrades available at the airport, typically this is between USD 500 and USD 1000 one-way when it is offered (and not offered too often). Ask at check-in. An interesting question is whether these are offered when op-ups would otherwise happen (a game played by several other airlines now, no idea of the CX policy on this).
