Hi, I am a new member here. I am planning to take a roundtrip CX831/CX830 from JFK to TPE in late March and coming back in mid april. It stops through HKG and I will stop over for 3 days on the way back. I am purchasing an economy seat for about $1001USD. My question is how can I maximize the mileage earned for this trip. I know they have a Marco Polo and Asian miles programs. I'm in the US and don't see any CX credit cards for either programs available to me, so it seems like my only option is the SPG Amex which I can eventually transfer the points back into CX miles later. Is this my best option or is there something else I should be checking out. Thanks for any info.

Also I am flying a 346 for the long trip JFK-TPE, I was wondering if anyone knows what economy seats on that aircraft offer more legroom? I checked seatguru, and it didn't match up with what I was told on the phone by the CX reprentative. I'm about 6'2" and my wife is 6" who is also coming with me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Ok I did a search and found this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325257&highlight=CX831 but I'm not sure if it's still valid since it's from 04'. Basically I think it says 30C/H or 54C/H are the best for economy if you want legroom and an empty seat next to you. But since I will be traveling with my wife would it make sense to have one of us try to reserve one of those seats then after take off the other one just jump into the empty seat, will they allow that or must they keep those seats empty for security reasons?

Your best option is probably NOT to join the Asia Miles or Marco Polo Club. Instead, earn AAdvantage points from your CX flight. But be aware the economy class you're in. Not all class that earns 100% asia miles can earn AA miles.

You can go to http://www.seatguru.com for seat reference. Looks like 54A/C and 54H/K are the best.

Good luck on getting them! :)

Don't want to disappoint you, but one need elite status of some sort to get the exit row seat, ie row 54 on A346.

Only if your booking class on CX is H, Y or B, will you be able to earn mileage on AAdvantage miles.

Your other option will be to join either ASIAMILES themselves, or LAN PASS or Alaska MVP for all other mileage earning fares.

See HERE (http://www.cathaytalk.com/showthread.php?t=731) for seating info on the airbus A346. Scroll down to # 4.
