Has anyone ever purchased eyeglasses in Hanoi? If so, any recommendations? I'm headed there the end of next month (got my passport back with visa yesterday) and thought that they'd probably be cheaper over there than here in the US. Good thing is that I don't need an examination just new glasses.

Never needed glasses myself.. but noticed there are a number of shops (?opticians) clustered together in a small street running off from Ly Thai To towards the north end of the Hoan Kiem Lake. Pretty sure its called Luong Van Can (it certainly is after its crossed Hang Gai). So look in the old quarter for the junction of Luong Van Can and Hang Gai (there is a cafe "Little Hanoi" on the corner) then walk down the hill towards the lake. If you have google earth its 21° 1' 55.2"N, 105° 51' 3.2"E. The shops are on that section. Usual Hanoi thing... all the shops selling similar stuff seem to congregate..

Also there are some "medical instrument" shops among the bookshops in Trang Tien street, roughly opposite the Dan Chu hotel (ie the theatre end). Pretty sure I've seen an opticians there.

Actually, I have found glasses are cheaper in the US when you factor in the unknowns in buying in an less developed place. For example, you cannot be certain you get shatterproof lenses is such places. Also, in many countries, I am told, e.g., Japan, the fames are made to fit a different average face and there can be fit problems, often problems that you may not notice 'til you get home.

In the US, Costco and the For Eyes chain have very good prices and good customer ratings.

With that said, I bought a pair of fancy prescription glasses, with German frames, in Thailand and have been happy with them.
