I have a home netgear wireless router and I run a couple of macs wirelessly on it and I have a Dell desktop connected to the router via ethernet. I don't trasmit the SSID and I use WAP and limit access via mac address I was having some problems with my wireless and i started looking on the router. Everything looked okay until I saw that the attached devices and I saw a name I did not recognize. The mac address of the device was for the desktop dell which is named desktopdell but the name had changed to OKPRO. I unplugged and then restarted the router and looked again and it said desktopdell after refreshing it said OKPRO. I unattached the desktop from the router. The desktop is firewalled with MacAffee. Is this a netgear issue or have I been hacked?

Given the configuration you've described, I'd say it's unlikely, you seem to have it locked down pretty well.

Is one of your macs a macbook pro, as in MACBOOKPRO? Maybe something's getting truncated somehow.

Well, if you have been hacked, then you need to reset your router to factory defaults, reset the password, and key up some WAP.

You might also consider getting a new router.

But I don't think you've been hacked - unless you're doing something interesting, are important, or are rich?

1) Does the netgear log say whether it was a LAN connection or a wireless connection? If it has the MAC of the dell it may remotely be a hacker, but I would expect that they would probably go after an easier target.

Here is my idea:
1) Use the LAN connection (wired) to enter the setup menu
2) Disable wireless
3) Change the administrator password
4) Restart router (unplug then replug)
5) Change the WPA or WPA2 key (make sure you're not using WEP)
** Use a 60-64 digit password, use symbols, upper and lowercase letters and numbers.
6) Restart router
7) Copy and paste this password to a text file. Put this text file (e.g. notepad-.txt) on a flash drive/floppy/etc. and use it to enter the password on the other computers (copy and paste)
8) Sit back and be confident that unless someone has a couple of supercomputers, your network is safe.

Thank you all for your input. The OKPRO is using the mac address of the LAN attached Dell.
