I know a number of people got in on the cheap UA deal posted some time ago in the MR forum. Any tips on clean, safe, affordable lodgings to help make this a total budget trip?
Thanks in advance for any tips!

St. Thomas, as in the USVI?
I had a decent expereince at the Island View Guest House. The rooms were all right..while not a "Westin" at all, not a dump either. The views from the balcony & the dining area are increcible. The honor bar is very convenient (just that, an honor bar--you pour & pay for what you need).
I'd also check out any of several options on over on St. John. To me, Charolotte Amalie was crowded & touristy...St. John, on the other hand, a whole different world: a lot more pristine, a lot more beautiful, still several decent shops & restaurant offerings (the muffins & coffee at Mongoose Junction are the BEST!), a lot more laid back.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. Yes, I meant STT in the USVI.
Thanks, skye1, for the guest house tip. I had thought about going over to St. John, but I'm going to be there such a short time I wasn't sure it was worth it, though obviously it isn't far. I'll check my flight schedule & see how late/early my arrival & departure are and give St. John more thought.
It's really not that far. From Red Hook, it's a short ferry across to Cruz Bay.
Worth the trip, IMHO. It's usually a cheap and quick taxi (all the taxi's are vans, IIRC) from just about anywhere on St. Thomas over to Red Hook.
I think you can also get a 45-minute ferry from either near the airport on in Charolotte Amalie, but the word on the street there seemed to be that the taxi-to-redhook-&-ferry-to-cruz-bay route was a little faster and a LOT cheaper.
I haven't stayed at Island in a couple of years now, so it could be totally different...could be better, could be worse. The owner's husband had just passed away when I was staying there, so I'm sure my stay couldn't be "typical".
The website sure looks a LOT better. The view on the "main page" really is what it looks like from your breakfast table. There were also a lot of inexpensive options on St. John, IIRC. Some people in our group had gotten rooms at the Inn at Tammarind Court in Cruz Bay. It surely wasn't the Westin or the Caneel Bay, but it wasn't a dump at all either. They spoke well of it, especially for the price.
There's a fantastic little bar in Redhook, right on the parking lot of the shopping center next to the ferry dock, called "Duffy's Love Shack". FANTASTIC drinks and FANTASTIC food, in case you have a short wait for the ferry.

Excellent! Thanks again for the additional tips! I'll definitely look into St. John via Red Hook to Cruz Bay.
