So I got a photo speeding ticket in DC in June of last year while driving a car from Dollar. Dollar sends me a letter in Septmeber with a copy of the violation saying they're going to pass my information to the DC govt who will reassign the ticket to me. I will be responsible for paying $50 to DC directly. Also, Dollar charged $25 to my cc for "processing".

Ok Dollar, you got me on that one. $25 seems excessive for sending one letter to me and one to DC, but whatever. Of course Dollar manages to screw this up. They never sent my info to DC and didn't pay the ticket on my behalf in time to avoid the penalty.

So yesterday I get another letter from Dollar which shows the same ticket, but with a late penalty of $50 attached. AND they already charged my card for the full $100!

I called DC Photo Violations who told me clearly that if Dollar had sent them the info in time, they would have sent me a bill for $50 which I would have had to pay within 30 days.

I called the useless Dollar cust service and left a message for their ticket processing department (they NEVER answer the line).

Nice try Dollar! Talk your way of this one!

Simply dispute the credit card charge and tell dollar you will pay the 50.00 Only.

Dollar finally called me and promised to credit me the $50 after I explained the situation and quoted their own letters directly. Incidently, my CITI cc dispute department initially said they would not dispute this item since it was my fault for speeding. I had to explain it to the CSR three times before they finally agreed. Luckily Dollar came through a few days later.

Just another example of why you must dispute problem charges via letter--phone calls will not protect your legal rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

I sympathize with the screw up and charging you twice but the $25 processing charge is clearly stated in the contract and is the same for all rental car companies as far as I know. They are trying to run a business and so if they have to handle any paper after your rental is costs them time which has to be paid for somehow.
