These are both U.S. territories, so no passport is needed.

Your DL will be fine. Bear in mind they drive on the left in the USVI (if you're renting a car)

They drive on the left but the cars have the steering wheel on the left...very confusing at your first turn.

While I agree that the DL will be sufficient for this trip I must mention that having the passport is always the best option. Being in USVI you may just get the opportunity to hop over to another island where you won't be covered by the DL.

Again to answer your original question DL got you covered in USVI, but if you have the time get the passport... you may just want to visit BVI while you are so close.

Get the passport. If you are in the USVI, it wouldbe a shame not to hop over to the BVIs at least for a day visit.

i'm not sure this is still correct. you don't need a passport for puerto rico, but i'm fairly certain you DO to get to the virgin islands. this (http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52075,00.html) from united's website. (i realize the op is flying aa, but it's up to immigration, right, not the airline?) having read american's text on this, i'm just confused.

if you have one, i'd take it to be sure.

You won't need one. But like some other folks have said, get one if you have time; not only does it give you the opportunity to island-hop if you feel like it, but it's a much better form of ID once you're off the mainland, legally speaking.

Dumb question, maybe, but I've got an SJU flight coming up.

Do you clear US immigrations coming back from SJU? I wouldn't think so, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I just don't feel like standing in an immigration line coming back from a US territory.

No chance of facing an immigration line when you fly out of SJU into the US mainland. For immigration purposes it is considered a domestic flight.
