Travel Technology - Rental DVD -> iTunes -> iPod?

Is it possible for me to transfer movies to my video iPod and watch them inflight? It has been a couple of years since I ripped Netflix movies to my Dell notebook to watch while traveling international - and the studios may have made even this impossible. I did a preliminary search and was unable to find an answer, so sorry if this has been covered. According to Apple, the 80g has 6.5 hour video playback which would accommodate 2 movies, and I don't mind the tiny screen.
TIA,
Sam

You may need something to "bypass" the protection on some DVD's.

If I've said it once, I've said it 100 times...Its illegal for any of us to tell you about something like Handbrake which would read any DVD and then copy it into iTunes for you. Since that could voilate the DMCA then we cannot tell you anything about Handbrake (which could read any DVD and then copy it into itunes for you).

I use an app named "Pocket DVD Wizard". Will shrink DVDs down to just about any size (many to choose from), handles secondary tracks (great for audio commentary!) and subtitling (for foreign films). I've ripped all 4 commentaries from the standard "Fight Club", the music-only track from "L.A. Confidential", and added subtitles from "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". Has serious issues with TV shows (tried "Lost", got nowhere), special features (such as "making of"s), and audio tracks for complicated releases (such as T2 special edition, with the "pick your version" freature). But all-in-all, for what it does, it's great.
One of these days, I'll buy a Mac, just for Handbrake.

That thread hasn't been posted to since Jan/06.
If I was to use Handbrake, I'd probably load X on my RedHat 9 server, and try to get it working there. Which would be cheaper then buying a Mac... :)

Magic DVD Ripper has worked well for me - it's about $35. Nero Ultra is probably a great choice, too.

Thanks!
I hate to ask, but I'm going to...
Is this an all-in-one program - meaning will I also need something to "bypass" protection?

actually i tried to download this and couldn't even do that.
i am running windows xp professional on a dell notebook.
i ended up w/ a zip folder that had 3 files - 2 dll and a third file that when i clicked it said that it wouldn't work b/c it couldn't find one of the two dll files that was in the zipped folder????
obviously i am not very tech smart. i would love to have a free program, but i would be willing to pay if necessary to have an all-in-one solution. leumas - does dvdfab provide this, or will i still have trouble with security issues on my rented dvd's?
i have no trouble (guilt) copying dvd's that i want to watch. i delete them when i am done b/c i don't have room on my computer's hd.
thanks again and sorry to bother everyone.

If you don't mind spending $40, PQ DVD (http://www.pqdvd.com/dvd-to-ipod-video-converter.html) will do it in one click.

Pretty dumb basic Ipod question. I tried searching. :) TIA.
I have a Nano, my sister just got a Mini from someone. Is there anything to stop us from loading the songs on my latop (that I've d/l from my CDs and bought at the Apple store online) to her Mini?
I hope the answer is no. We are meeting on vacation next week and she wants me to bring my laptop and I don't want to. :)

There is nothing legally from stopping you - the American Home Recording act says that its perfectly legal for family members to share music.
Apple throws a slight wrench in the plans with how they allow you to setup your iPod. You have two choices, automatically sync to your library (or a part of it) or manually sync, where you manually drag and drop songs onto the iPod.
If you automatically sync to your laptop and then connect to someone elses laptop, it will say: "hey this thing is tied to Traveler's laptop do you want to ERASE and re-sync with the new laptop?" ...
If you manually manage your songs then you can plug into any computer and sync away without warnings or messages. The downside is that you have to manually manage your library.
If you want to get around that, and will have your laptop then its easy to pull songs off of one ipod (which you can then transfer to another). Senuti is free works great on the Mac ... most of the windows apps seem to be in the $20 range.

Hey, your timing was perfect! I spent last weekend at a family reunion with a mix of iPod owners and studio-quality musicians...It was glorious! We shared so much great music at a high quality...The best part is everyone kept saying "where can I BUY this....) To me, that is so cool...spreading neat music among family for free..but they want to own the disc.
Sorry, shameless plug, but Lala.com is starting to make more (moral) sense to me.
