I will be doing a short M/R EWR-HKG at the end of this month, with one night at the Sheraton and my second night at the Hyatt. Can anyone suggest a good (not too expensive) local restaurant where I can dine solo? I 'm not a big eater, and was just looking for someplace possibly close to the Hyatt for an early dinner Sat night. Last time, I just ate at the Hyatt, which was fine--but I wanted to try something a bit more local.

Trying going to Staunton Street in Soho - there are plenty of good places up there and it is quite lively

I second this suggestion! The Soho area provides a lot of interesting and varied dining options, most of which aren't too pricey. I was in HKG in December and had positive experiences at "Pacific Grill" on Staunton St (steak) and "chedi" on Elgin St (Thai). You could walk it from the Hyatt, but taxis in HKG are cheap and plentiful. Have fun !

That's one long walk, and you have to know where you're going, with all the construction by the waterfront.

SoHo is hardly "local" if by "local" you mean what HK Chinese people eat.

Close to the Grand Hyatt there isn't that much - you are in danger of straying into the fleshpots of Wanchai, which is a whole different experience. But if you get through that then in the backstreets of Wanchai there are many very local eateries that are open late at night where you can get a filling meal for HK$50 or less. There are a number, for example, in Thomson Road (use http://www.ypmap.com to find streets).

If you would like a 'local' experience with a bit of people watching thrown in - try the Tsui Wah Restaurant on Wellington Street (below Lan Kwai Fong).
