There was a comment in an earlier thread that it might be worth checking if the GSA in MRU (who also act for BA out of the same office) would ticket RTW fares on CX to avoid the BA fuel surcharges.
This is the answer I got back this morning after waiting 5 days.

If only for the curiousity of it, maybe if the PNR were crafted outside MRU and sent to them for ticketing they might respond differently. EF shows that CX publishes the full range of OW RTW and circle fares ex-MRU, so that shouldn't stop them.

Cathay has Rules. Last year Cathay North American Res explained to me that there would be no way I could get their office in DAM to ticket an xONEx that began by flying BMED to LON, thence Cathay. If the agent was correctly stating company policy fwiw the MRU situation would be similar. Have you tried IBL Travel to see if they will do it? (Note that last year at least they would ticket BA - didn't ask about Cathay - but wanted wire transfer.)

I don't understand the logic here - why would CX have GSAs in places they don't fly to if they can't ticket OW tickets from there? Personally I have been very impressed with CX's GSA in DOHA (details on the CX website) who was very responsive in putting together a AONE3 for me.

Why not? If I'm in MRU and want to buy a full-fare ticket on Cathay from JNB to HKG, I imagine they'd be glad to take my money. I'm far from privy to the scheme by which the OW airlines split up the revenues from an xONEx but one could presume Cathay will lose money in the situation being discussed, and chooses not to do so.

IBL is the CX GSA.Ummm. Well, besides wanting wire transfer, the first couple of their people I dealt with were so untrained they couldn't spell ONE, so perhaps a superior might have a different answer. I ended up dealing with one RPuddoo who was as knowledgeable as the others were ignorant.

Perhaps it's because your first longhaul sector is not on CX?

I had the same experience as the OP back in the days when ex CAI xONEx's were more sensibly priced. Ended up getting tix issued either via the BA office there or AA's GSA.
