Texas - Opinions on stopover Houston Hard Rock Cafe dash

Okay, so my mere presence here should indicate a somewhat addictive personality but I wanted some feedback on whether I can easily make a dash to the Houston Hard Rock Cafe from Intercontinental during an approx 8 hour stopover on the way back from my YVR-BUH run in Aug. Having been to Houston once upon a time, my first reaction was, as it is to everything else, no problem! Then I thought I should ask the experts here for feedback.

I'd rather do something than pay USD$24 just to sit in an airport lounge (I'm a no nothing elite and use the Priority Pass the few times a year I fly internationally) for that long and a run into the city should help keep me awake. The street address is:

Hard Rock Cafe Houston
502 Texas Avenue
Houston, TX 77002

so can anyone weigh in with approx taxi ride & cost. Is security a nightmare at IAH for doing this short city jaunt? IAH is my first U.S. city so some of that 8 hour gap will get eaten up on arrival with U.S. Customs.

My Hard Rock T-Shirt collection now numbers 30+ so to add another one is ^ .The special bonus is the HRC website says there's one scheduled to open in BUH in June. ^

All opinions welcome. :)

Is it possible that you would pre-clear Customs & Immigration in Vancouver?

My experience of arriving from an international flight is the inspection process is pretty efficient so I wouldn't worry about it taking too long.

As far as the trip itself, you should have plenty of time to make it downtown and back. The cab fares from the airport are zonal and I think downtown is zone 2. It'll run you $40-$45 each way. With no traffic, the ride will be about 20-30 minutes.

You may want to consider renting a car. With 8 hours you can do much more than just go to Hard Rock. Be mindful of rush hour when adding other locations to your itinerary.

Not only possible, mandatory. I should've mentioned my whole itinerary is YVR-SEA-AMS-BUH-AMS-IAH-YVR, so my only exceptionally long stop happens to fall in Houston with the rest of the connections being under 4 hours.

I see...I thought you were arriving from YVR. Obviously you won't preclear in AMS. In any case, I would expect your inspection process at IAH to not take a whole lot time.

If you take a cab, it will run what the previous poster said - and take you door-to-door (there's also a tollway available for part of the ride depending on the time of day). But, if you rent a car, you will be shuttled to a central facility where all cars are. This timing should be factored in. I can't recall if there's much else around the area of the HardRock. Houston is a very spread out city.

Hard Rock Cafe is in downtown Houston. You could possibly take airport shuttle to Hyatt Hotel which is a few blocks away. From downtown you could take the light rail out to the museum district, if that's of interest.

A capital idea! Paying $100 roundtrip for a taxi sounded pricey and renting a car was also not really my style given my horrible sense of direction. Yes, that sounds quite the plan and thanks for sharing it. :) ^

Oh what we do for our addictions...:D

I'm sure you have a good reason for going to the Hard Rock Cafe, though I can't imagine what it would be! There are a zillion great places to go in Houston and you have plenty of time to do it. I say go for it. There are lots of great car rental deals to be had at IAH too. Check that out. Depending on the time of time be very wary of the traffic, but plan ahead and it's way more enjoyable than sitting at the airport.

You could throw in a GPS with the rental. From when to when is your layover?
