Travel Technology - Verizon Treo 700.. or keep separate PDA?

I'm getting a new phone this week, and I need some advice from people who have switched from a separate PDA to a phone/PDA (I'm looking at the Treo 700p from Verizon).

I currently have a windows based HP pda. Prior to that I've had various Palm pda's. I swithced because I prefer the handwriting recognition of the Windows OS.

Has the handwriting recognition improved on the palm (can you write on the screen and it can interpret your handwriting, as opposed to using graffiti?)

I don't need the internet or e-mail functions of the PDA, so that's not a reason to switch. I'm only looking at switching so I can carry around less equipment.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I don't believe the Treo's -- Palm or Windows -- support writing on the screen. Broadly speaking, the thumbboard is very quick to input data, and not a bad shift once you get used to it.

I personally wouldn't carry a non-PDA phone (I've just moved to an HTC StarTrek), but I did carry Treos for years. I just tend to take fewer notes these days -- I primarily use it for calendar/address book/push email (with short responses)

The treo is flat awesome. I love the full keyboard. After you use it for a while, you'll hate pulling out the stylus (you hardly ever need to, and it just slows you down when you do.)

Highly recommended.

The Treo (at least Palm version) does support writing on the screen. Not sure about WinCE. Note: it is graffiti by default, but there are third party packages available which do handwriting. That said, I find my handwriting indecipherable by man or machine.

I just recently had to replace my Palm Zire 71 and Verizon cell phone. I decided not to put all my eggs in one basket and keep the two seperate units.

Just my paranoid self poking through.
