I'm doing a bit of island hopping later this year, going to Tobago, Barbados, Grenada and ending in Trinidad. Some of my stops are <24 hrs (but overnight). Will I have to pay departure taxes on all stops?

tab->bgi->gnd, ~5 hr in bgi (possible to leave airport?), ~23 hr overnight stop in gnd
gnd->pos, overnight, ~10hrs
pos->geo

You definitely won't have to pay the departure tax at BGI. Just make sure you tick the In Transit box on their immigration form. You'll still have to get processed and stamped in and out, which can take some time. With 5 clear hours you can certainly take a taxi to St Lawrence Gap for beach or food. Returning from TAB with long BGI layovers I have twice taxied to Southern Palms Beach Club and found a warm welcome, good food, and great beach. And they'll watch your luggage if need be.

If your 5 hours have been consumed by immigration formalities or other delays you can at least leave the airport and walk across the roundabout to the BBQ and beer place where the taxi drivers hang out. Much better than an uninterupted long airport experience!

I have not transitted through GND so don't know if you'l be stuck with a departure tax there. On some islands you are exempt if under 24 hours, others tax you if you stay overnight.

Please note that some territories (for sure Trinidad & Tobago) require that payment be made only in local currency only, you will be in for a shock when you pull out USD and it gets declined.

Barbados - USD13.00 (BBD25.00) for all departures. Passengers in transit who will be remaining in Barbados for less than 24 hours and children under 12 are exempt.

Trinidad & Tobago - USD16.50 for all departures (TTD100.00). Passengers in transit who will be remaining in Trinidad & Tobago for less than one night and children under 5 are exempt.

Grenada - Persons 13 years of age and older are required to pay USD20 (XCD50) for all departures. Persons from 5 to 12 years of age is USD10 (XCD25). Children under 5 years are exempted.

Hmmm... thanks for the update.

So looks like I will have to pay 2 x for Trinidad (TAB,POS departures) and Grenada.. but not for Barbados.

While POS will only accept Trinidad and Tobago dollars (oddly US Customs won't accept them for duty payments 8-) ), there is an ATM at the doorway to the duty free area that will dispense vouchers for the departure tax. It does count it as a cash advance however subject to whatever charges your card hits you for.
