The sales tax in las vegas is 7.5%, and since a "reasonable" restuarant tip is 15%, doubling the sales tax, it seems is an easy way to figure the proper tip. However, I have noticed that restuarants (usually) itimize alcoholic beverages on a separate line, and this is not included in sales tax amt at the end of the bill. [Drinks, I would guess are priced net.]
Question, if I just double the st, am I short changing the server, since he would not be tipped for drinks?

Yes.

The server brought you the drinks too. I tip 20% unless there is a serious problem with service. I consider 15% as a minimum tip or for less than good service.

If the meal is comped and you give a tip, you're way over 100%!

lol

100% of the bill in the top restaurants that I've seen you recommend? Tell me where you'll be eating each night and I will be your server!

You can't be serious to suggest a 100% tip?
My op was to note that unless one carefully reads the entire bill, the 15% (double the sales tax amount) would not have covered the drink portion. entire bill.]

In BC (Canada) the liquor tax is 10% on top of the 7% Federal. If you double the tax total, you're likely to pay up to 34% ;)

What happened to simple math? If 15% is to hard to do in your head...

...most mobile phones have calculators. ^

I ususally take the pre-tax total and figure 20% of that then round up or down from there. In certain situations, i.e., Happy Hours and cheap Lunch Specials, I'll tip $1 per item or $2 per person since my usual method would only be a few bucks.

I tip ~20% too but my minimum tip is exactly ZERO. It's got to be really bad but it comes up a couple of times a year.

I also tip at least 20% (Usually more) unless the service is poor.

Or it could be like on female bartender suggested that I needed to tip $3 per drink. Whereas I told her that is almost as much as the drink I ordered.....and all you had to do was open a bottle......No tip for you.
