I know you had nothing to do with it but Viennese would resent being lumped into Eastern Europe. I think Vienna is arguably the crown jewel of central Europe and has been for the last 150 years or so

Methinks you are right about that, but we Czechs think that Prague is the crown jewel of central Europe, and has been for well over 500 years, if not a milenia.

And in case anyone is interested, all those famous Vienese pastries are actually Czech :D

Try the Le Meridien......very stylish and beautiful. Large rooms, extravagnt bathrooms, free Hi Speed Wireless Internet, fantastic location and normally L Meridien offers decent rates when you book in advance. Just got back yesterday and am still absolutely excited.
Good luck.

Well, if you're looking for budget, I just did 5 nights at Pension Schweizer at 41 euros a night and was quite happy there. There's photos in my 2007 Vienna folder. 5 min walk to the Ring tram, or U2 or U4 lines, and a coffee shop with free wi-fi was a few blocks away via tram near the Rathaus.

Try the Le Meridien

Do they have rates that would be suitable for a budget traveler, though?

Welcome to FlyerTalk :)

I always do my homework and read reviews thoroughly before I stay at a hostel.

For my February stay in Vienna, I made the reservation with the Wombat hostel. They had a second hostel opened up in Vienna.

Here's the link: Wombat's City Hostel - The Lounge (http://wombats-vienna.at/thelounge_vienna-hostel/index.php)

The trains in Vienna are pretty good from the suburbs to get you in/out of the city centre.

When I visit there I stay at the following hotel, the rooms are large and the bar is open 24/7 ;)
The train station is 1 block away.

Keep in mind that Priceline is an option for Vienna hotels. Check the bid histories and hotel lists at http://betterbidding.com and similar bidding sites for more information.

Let me know how out-of-place two mid-50 aged people would look over there, and if I would get hustled at the pool tables. Nice reviews of that location.

Will do!

I leave next weekend to start my European trip. I won't stay at that hostel until the 17th and am going to stay for a few days.

Silly me but I just noticed that the OP is looking for hotels and not hostels. Just to be clear that Wombat is a hostel .. though a fancy one at that :)

Have a look at www.hrs.de for decent prices on hotels in Europe. And also at www.ebay.de There are often great deals on hotels in Vienna for 2 nights (the ones run by cultuzz are very reliable. We've gotten vouchers from them several times for hotels in Germany and Switzerland and they are an excellent company to deal with. You can pay in various currencies.)

Every time I have stayed in Vienna, it has been at the Hotel Post, which is a vintage building from the K.u.K period and well maintained 3 star hotel, with a great location inside the ring near the Scweden Platz, and a very competitive price in spite of all of that. It is a block from the metro and from a stop on the tram that runs around the ring. If you want to cut cost even more, ask for one of the rooms with shared bath on the hall. Great breakfast is included.
