American Express Membership Rewards - Itemized list of rewards points...?

Hey folks, this seems a knowledgeable crowd about this kind of thing...I'm enrolled in AE's Gold Card MRP. I called the Executive Office this week with a simple request:

Can I get an itemized list of how many MR points I've earned for each purchase?

Honestly, this is kind of a no-brainer. You know they have this information, since they can keep track of purchases and (presumably) points earned. Unfortunately, I went through three people at 1-800-AXP-EARN who gave me the proverbial blank look before I decided to call the Exec Office. No dice there either.

I'd simply like to assure I'm credited for points earned, since they've now gone to this hideous Bonus Points Mall system - and in December I registered for the Holiday Retail Bonus program, which was 2x for most retail purchases.

Given that it can take up to three months for points to post to the account, how on earth am I to know whether I've been credited properly for each purchase - especially since the BPM in particular is full of exclusions (no coupons, no discount codes, etc.) I don't believe I used "coupons," but I did buy one item that was on sale, I'd like a chance to dispute the situation if the vendor tells AmEx I violated the terms of purchase listed on the BPM.

Unfortunately, according to all parties involved, the only accounting I will receive is one flat lump of points per month listed at the bottom of each statement.

Wonder if it would help me to upgrade to the Platinum. I'm considering it, if only for improved customer service and slightly more clueful 800-number agents.

welcome to FT :)

there are online membership reward point statements. there isnt anything beyond that.

amex is pretty bad about giving out points, so be aware that disputing anything will probably not get you much.

American Express' business model assumes that Platinum cardholders are more interested in benefits, and less interested in reward points, than green or gold cardholders. If you want to maximize point earnings stay with gold, you will not receive more detailed Membership Rewards account reconcillations by changing to Platinum.

In my experience American Express is very good about rewarding the points you have earned, but their documentation is poor. More than once I have seen my account balance increase without explanation and the amount of the increase invariably offsets an error on another entry. This means they detected and corrected the problem, but didn't bother to document the adjustment. (I have never had the balance reduced without explanation.)

I am curious which merchant(s) you found worthwhile to use the Bonus Points Mall. These merchants also participate in similar shopping portals operated by airline frequent flyer programs, and most offer more miles per dollar than the one (or two at Christmas) points offered by American Express.

(perks up) Really???

At Xmas I bought a Dell computer from Dell.com and a large-screen TV from Bestbuy.com. I'd be very interested in info on shopping portals featuring these merchants, and thanks for the information.

Honestly, I'm disappointed that Amex doesn't offer this service to cardholders. It can't be that difficult to make computer servers spit out the information on request. I realize they process millions of transactions per month, but still. If I can play by the rules by using this bonuspointsmall.com, the least they can do is let me see whether the points I'm supposedly achieving are making a difference in my MR account.
