I really like CheapoVegas too for the fun information. It's doesn't seem to be updated a lot though. The site does give a few steps for finding a good rate by checking out specific sites. I personally haven't booked a room though because every time I've gone, I've gotten a great air and hotel package. I also hear TravelAxe is pretty good.

I've never found a great deal with packages. I won't prepay a room, so that rules out consolidators and many websites too. I book everything directly with the provider website.

The time you pick to go will impact your cost much more than the site/provider you book through. Sun-Thurs is much cheaper than Fri-Sat.

Avoid big conventions by checking here: http://www.lvcva.com/meetings/convention-calendar.jsp

I also love cheapovegas. It may not be updated as often as it could be, but it is also the only site I have ever seen give honest reviews like this one for the IP: The rooms are fair: clean, but small and spartanly equipped. The decor in the non-renovated rooms is kind of ugly, but not overly tacky or disturbing (like the casino). The decor in the renovated rooms is newer and boring. You want to avoid the motel-style rooms out back because they overlook the parking garage, get a lot of exhaust fumes and are not nice. I doubt you will see something like that on Expedia or Travelocity.

I'm currently planning a trip in May for what could be as many as 12 people. Normally I would wait until February or March to lock in the dates, waiting for the Flamingo to announce their hot deals that far out. This year we had to decide early since people had to request vacation time, so it is the week of 5/13. Flamingo is showing the cheapest rates that week, and the convention calendar shows nothing big going on. Flamingo is currently at $120, but I hope it will drop to $50-80 by trip time. Last trip I booked it at $90 and it kept dropping, so I kept canceling and rebooking.

My recommendation would be to read through cheapovegas reviews along with all of the other review sites out there and decide which properties fit what you want. Then start watching those hotel's websites for deals.

My website doesn't list prices, but I do give my not-so-humble opinions of the hotel/casinos if that might be of any help before you book a place.

I am in the midst of re-doing the site to make it more easy to read and navigate, but the info will pretty much remain the same.

I really like cheapo vegas also! They have a NY side also which will be quite helpful this summer. I usually check www.tripadvisor.com for rooms but then double check the hotels sites as well if that is an option. For the poster who said that they don't prepay for their rooms I thought that was standard in Vegas. How do you get around that? I dislike prepaying for Vegas or any where I go as things can change and don't want to get stuck with having to pay for a night.

Edit: www.tripadvisor.com should be www.travelaxe.com dee dee dee

You can almost always book directly with any of the major hotels and get a refundable rate (usually lets you cancel/change within 24 or 48 hours). Sometimes they will offer a pre-paid/non-refundable rate that's a bit cheaper, but I'll pay more for the flexibility. It's been my experience that the 3rd party booking engines mostly have the pre-paid/non-refundable rates.

Our normal hotel is the Flamingo (good rates, great location, great pool) and I just book online at www.flamingolv.com. All the Harrah's properties seem to be the same policy. They will bill you your first nights rate as a deposit when you book, but you can cancel up to 48 hours ahead of check-in time. Two years ago I cancelled three times in about 10 days as the price dropped. It took me a few minutes to decipher my credit card statement, but every cancellation posted a credit to my account immediately.

Cheapovegas should link you directly to each hotels website if you don't know it.

I also hate the package sites because everything is shown per person, assuming two. I find it as annoying as the airlines quoting one way fares in advertising. Just tell me what the room costs overall, regardless of having one or 10 people in the room.

Normally, I hate packages too but I'm guessing others may be able to tap into volume discounts that as an individual you won't be able to otherwise (easily) get. We book through a local travel place (Jubilee Travel) that has weekly "best bets" which are sometimes just amazing.

Our recent trip to Vegas in Dec 2006 during NFR was $229CDN/person double occ and $365 after taxes (YVR airport fees are nuts). This included air and hotel. We searched high and low to see if we could match the price by booking ourselves and couldn't come close. Granted though, I'm assuming the bulk of the savings were probably through the flight.

Normally we do book directly through the hotel for the cheapest price. The hotel will usually match prices you find for the hotel elsewhere. Plus, you can always just ask if there are discounts CAA/AAA members, for your company, govt employees, etc. We went to the Stampede in Calgary a few years back (busiest time of the year for Calgary) and were able to get a room at the Delta for half the price they were showing on their website just by asking if there were any discounted rooms for the company I work for.

Many different sources can be best at times for a given hotel. Consider
Southwest-special offers-as well as the others. Almost never does the hotel, itself, offer the best deal, but they will match what you find elsewhere.

Not to mention their foray into doing Vegas for less than $19/day.

One more suggestion, do Google search for cheapest rate at X hotel and check it out. Often you are seeking a "mistaken" quote that it is out of line
with other offers. But if you can confirm it you've got a deal. An example: the Jubilee tickets run more than $70 apiece delivered, bur Ballys offers a Jubilee package as low as $129 including 2 tickets and room. Go figure!

Cheapo offers some great observations and opinions but very little about actually booking rooms.

Maybe if you tried the $20 trick you may get a deal on a room instead of being so judgmental on those that do.

actually, in most cases, the package aligns with the regular room rate price. For example, a 1 night package for Tuesday, February 6th with 2 tickets is $213.93 while the room alone is $75.21

Harrah's room rate packages and room rates vary from day to day.

Considering that nobody pays full price for Jubilee (at minimum they use a 2 for 1 -- or use the 1/2 price ticket stand) --- you would probably pay less by getting the room for $75.21 and the tickets separately.

Though, if you did actually find the package for room and two tickets at $129 --- I would book that very quickly. ;)
