I'm currently looking at moving from SPG to Hilton. I stayed at an SPG on New Years day at the AMS airport, booking the room through the hotel desk at the airport. I was notified that they aren't counting the night as a stay, nor am I getting any points for the money spent on the last minute suite.

Does Hilton have similar restrictions, or will most any rate paid count for points?

I'm currently a gold at SPG, and looking at getting the Amex to get Silver at least, then work my way up to Gold at Hilton in short order.

Thanks

That's bloody funny. I've booked Holiday Inns and other hotels at airport hotel desks (for example when I get misconnected with two separate tix .. like the last FJ NAN-MEL flight of the day, that just barely didnt connect to the night's SQ, and I found out the hard way that MEL closes down for the night at around 11, nothing airside so I had to clear security, go landside..)

Got points every time.

Was a SPG property's desk that put you in direct contact with the property you booked or did you pick the phone and the call gets routed thru to a booking agent?

IIRC, there are occasions when certain properties use a central reservations agent, not associated with the hotel property on the signage at the airport.

I always suggest dialing hilton directly instead of using an airport phone bank.

Try calling SPGagain and see if you can be credited for your stay.

I booked it via the hotel desk in the customs area. The part that really frustrated me is as soon as I found out I was not getting credit, I found the exact same room on the starwood site for 5euros less than what I paid, so I ended up paying more for the room. The credit card charges were from the hotel, so it wasn't something like hotels.com where they do the charge.

Not a big deal as I did apply and get the hhonors amex today, so I'll be moving my business over here, as I do hope they are a bit more flexible if something like this happens again.

I do see the above restrictions, and will keep them in mind.

Some hotels no matter what chain will not give points/ credit if you book using the airline discount/ voucher. The rate is not that much better then the standard rate sometimes. I know in CLE the HGI & sheraton airport will not give credit with the voucher, but you can book it online for the same price normally.
