First of all, do not try to get here using Hertz NeverLost or Magellan RoadMate – you will be directed south from the I-75, then west and north to what was an empty lot being prepared for construction by the side of the freeway – the wrong side at that! The hotel is actually difficult to see from the correct road, SW 148th Street – if you see the Walgreen’s Drugstore look past it to the Courtyard by Marriott; the hotel is behind that, and you should be in the left line preparing to make a left turn. This is a new business area with a few chain restaurants and a large GM worldwide office collection at 149th St., and fairly remote from much unless you are visiting Humana or Memorial Hospital - and without an automobile you won't get there anyway, as there is no public transport.

The hotel is your typical and predictable Hilton Garden Inn, and with the exception of the ebullient and enthusiastic Jackie at the front desk, personnel are lackadaisical at best in reception duties. The two staffing the desk at our arrival seemed to purposefully be involved in other tasks, and the one who finally realized she would be stuck with actual work asked me “Are you standing there to check in sir?” (Not at all, I love visiting hotels and standing near the front desk – wonderful entertainment, you know!) Soon, she was working – and dynamic Jackie came out from the back room where she had been involved in some work, beamed a huge smile and welcomed us to the hotel, taking over the check-in. ^

We were given room # 535 (AAA rate $143.10 per night, a bargain in this area at this time of year,) and asked if we wished to have our two bottles of water to take with us. We used the single typically slower elevator and proceeded to our upper-floor end-of-the-hall room, a typical HGI room with the classic HGI bed and furnishings. We noted no problems and enjoy the reassuring standardization that GHI provides, with free HSIA. (The view out of the hall provided a look at a lot awaiting development well stocked with bovines, common in Florida due to a strange adaptation of the tax laws making it beneficial to own at least a steer or two.)

The restaurant, unlike most HGIs, is open breakfast, lunch and dinner. We took for the full breakfast option, and there was plenty lf variety, including a waffle station (but no signage to warn that you must use a spray on the iron’s grids, or burn the waffle and fuse it to the iron, causing lots of work for the staff.) Local specialties included grits, and passable biscuits and gravy. The somewhat surly short order cook can be persuaded to make eggs to order, but it is no mean feat – even with an empty restaurant, he tries to make himself appear busy and avoid unnecessary eye contact or acknowledgement you are there for a special order, unlike the two helpful women who work the tables.

All in all, this is a good Hilton Garden Inn with low rates, remote but not really far from Fort Lauderdale, Davie and even the Seminole Reservation, should you crave an airboat ride or a look at a gator or a hundred (but not close to FLL airport or the cruise terminal.) Expect the unfortunately stereotypical southern Florida version of service, and enjoy it when you are served by friendly personnel in the restaurant or by Jackie at the front desk - or soon, running the place!

See you are getting around:D

This is one of my favorite HGI for over 5 years I stayed there first about two weeks after it opened ( the rate included a free apple pie :) )

I get to stay here 3-4 times a year ( its quite close to where my parents live)
I am pleased to see they havent let it run-down unlike other HGIs of similar
age.

Despite the location the drive to MIA is well under 30 Mins.
Very pleased to see the cows are still there since I expect to be disappointed to drive up one day and find they are all gone.

Actually for anyone going to Dolphin games or Calder Racetrack this place is perfect.

Agreed - quite pleasant. Arrived at night with rental car and not to difficult to find if you can read a map carefully.

Pleasant staff, clean room, warm breezes after December California rains.

Not much in the area but great for off-the-plane safe place to stay on arrival in florida. recommend.

Just staying at the hotel now on an award stay to visit family in the area. I have stayed here twice before on business and it has been ok. This stay things have not been quite as good. I won't complain about the fire alarm due to a malfunction at 3:30 am one morning. I am glad that it works, but less enthused by the fact that it malfunctioned. But these things happen...It was interesting to note when everyone traipsed back to their rooms that they seemed to have put everyone on the same floor (5th).

As with previous visits the front desk staff are great. They are friendly and efficient and go the extra mile. This is probably (along with free internet access) the hotel's redeeming feature.

Housekeeping was inconsistent, failing regularly to replace the towels they removed and by turning our a/c down to the lowest setting so that when we got back to the room after a day/evening out the room was like an icebox.

The one thing that really did aggravate me is the way that people use the breakfast room as their own personal office. Every morning we were subjected to loud business people screaming into their cellphones (one was even using speakerphone ). The hotel lobby area has sufficient chairs/tables away from the breakfast area so that this is really unnecessary. The same goes for breakfast meetings which are held in a loud fashion and nobody even drinking coffee. In my view the hotel should direct these people to "non-eating" areas (of which there are sufficient) and some one these "important" business people should show a little more consideration for others and maybe be a bit more discreet (you would be amazed to know what I have found out this week about certain businesses just by having breakfast).

Next time I am in town I will probably try the Marriott over the road, even though I am a Diamond.

So right about the misleading GPS directions. Took me a few minutes after I turn off the GPS to find the HGI. Nice weekend getaway

Funnily enough the Garmin GPS I got from National took me to the front door without any problem.

As the mapping data are updated, or one is using a newer unit, this will undoubtedly become less of a problem.

You have been staying there since last Sunday? The false alarm happened on Monday morning (1/12), and I thought it was 4:30am, not 3:30am. I was there as well:)

Was it 04:30? In that case I stand corrected. But whether it was 03:30 or 04:30 it was still a rude awakening. :)

And, as I said, I am not complaining about that. I was in the Sheraton Heliopolis that burnt in the 80's with 19 deaths. There was no fire alarm and no sprinklers. False alarms are not something I complain to management about or ask the question: how much compensation am I due?

We've been here since last week and we are leaving for Europe tomorrow. Although the weather has not been great, it has been warm enough to thaw out. :D

Oh, I noticed that there was a group of European staying there. I might have bumped into you or your colleagues in the elevator and had a conversation about the false alarm the night before. The guy I talked to with German accient emphasized and joked about that he "went" downstair during alarm instead of "ran":D:D:D. Have a safe trip back home!:).
