WORTH IT ?

Whether it's worth it, I'd venture, is wholly dependent on what your dates are and (more importantly) what's going on to drive that hotel so high.
At $319/night, there is some event driving up the price for all hotels in the area.

IMO the Hilton Scottsdale is not worth it .... so I'd be surprised if the HGI Scottsdale is worth that. In any event, hotel's got pricing power these days.

nah - nothing in the area is worth that much money - I'd expand my search area a bit, (look @ Tempe - just a couple of miles south, and lots of good hotels there) and possibly look @ other brands( marriot, etc).... If you're staying for more than a couple of days, get on craigslist and get an apartment! You can rent a 3 bedroom house in the area for $1k a month... prolly not that hard to find one furnished and everything...
I have to agree there's got to be something going on during the time period you're looking at, I booked the ES in Tempe on Rural road @ $119 in December...
When you coming? Perhaps I can buy a fellow northerner a beer!

That's crazy New York-like pricing and, IMHO, not worth it for a HGI, nice as most are.

I stayed here in 2005 when I was doing a mattress run. At $52 a night, I felt it was a good value. It's close to one of the stadiums for spring training, so that's probably the reason for the high price. There are *plenty* of other Hilton locations in town. If you have the $75 Hilton/Red Cross certs you can use them at one Embassy Suites and Hilton location in town.

The only reason for this is several signature events that happen in Scottsdale in Jan.......Parada Del Sol, Barrett-Jackson Auctin, Kruse Auto auction, FBR Open, ...........you name it, its in Jan.

I always use the Embassy Suites at 24th st for meetings etc. -159$/night this week.
The property shows its age, but there is a shuttle and an exceptionally friendly staff, free parking and free internet for status bearers. Good breakfast too. They have a chef who reallys enjoys chatting with the guests. Lots of Latin restaurants in the area to walk too. Some might not like the area, but having lived in DC, my threshold of "dangerous" is different.

I would agree that an event in town must be driving prices up, plus it is January and many are flocking to AZ to escape the cold, but consider this...
1. The Hyatt (Old Town) is showing a rate of $229.00
2. Expedia.com shows a rate of only $259.00 for the HGI (Old Town)
3. Courtyard by Marriott (Old Town) is $269.00
Hyatt Place Old Town) is only $229.00
I'd say the folks at the HGI are being a littel greedy!

I'd say no. There are some nice properties a couple of miles south of PHX before Tempe that were much more reasonablelast year at this time. If I remember correctly an Amerisuites, Spring Hill Suites, and one of the Intercontinental Hotel Group properties. There are a number of golf tournaments and spring training prep about this time of year so it is their high season.

Wow, I live in the area, and I knew hotel rates went up this time of year, but didn't realize that much...
Couple of things, as others have said this is high season here (snowbirds) and many events. The Barrett-Jackson car auction is going on now. Then the Phoenix Open, or whatever it is called now (FBR open?). Then there's various tennis and other tournaments. Then March is Spring Training. Early April has the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, then Easter. Usually late April/early May hotel rates come down for the summer here.
As several others have suggested, look in other cities. I really don't see what the allure is to stay in Scottsdale...many of us here replace the 'c' with an 'n' :) Quite often a similar hotel (or meal) can be had a few miles away in Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, etc for 20% less. Some areas have a Scottsdale address but are actually within the city of Phoenix.
I did a mattress run at the DT @ 44th St/Van Buren the day after Thanksgiving, actually stayed there, was $90 with all the taxes/fees. It isn't a bad location....next to the Chinese Cultural Center (just avoid Chinese New Year), and very convenient for the zoo, botanical gardens, Phoenix Muni stadium (spring training), and downtown Tempe. And if you want to go to Scottsdale, it isn't a bad drive either. There's a HI across the street that was about $30 higher.
Feel free to shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to let you know what an area is like. Since I live here I don't know many of the hotels from the inside though.

Feb 13 or 14th were the dates I tried I got the same rate when I checked
Maybe this one is in disguise as a luxury resort?;)
How is the quality and location of the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort?
I found a fire sale rate of 179

I'm seeing the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak @ $169/night for both 13/14 Feb. Just go with that. Great part of town, mountain views (yes, different mountains than near S'dale).
Did you need to be at that particular location for a reason? It is coming up at $251 when I did a search.

If the Expedia rate is for the same exact room and T&Cs then I would cancel the res I have make a new one and put in for a $50 amex Card for having beaten Hilton.com, remember to print out the expedia page.
But most likely Id just stay at Squaw Peak for $169 rather then a HGI for $209, its maybe a 15 drive away from S OT

Jan 01/06 - Feb 28: $780.00/week, Monthly $2,180
This cozy fully furnished rental vacation 4 bedroom+, (sleeps 10) is a vacation rental home in a great "near everything" south Scottsdale. This popular Scottsdale Az vacation home is just a short distance from ASU University and stadium, "Spring Training " baseball stadium and world class Scottsdale shopping and what's to see and do in Arizona.
and a bunch more @ http://phoenix.craigslist.org/sub/
I'm all for gathering Hhonors points like a madman when someone else is paying, but if it's me writing the checks, I'd be jumping outside the box looking for value. Anything over about $140 a night is robbery, even if it is high season, and I just wouldn't pay it....
I know, I know, as a diamond member you get a chocolate bar and 2 bottles of water @ a hotel, but I'd just bet you could negotiate that into a furnished home rental alot easier than you could get an upgrade from the front desk there @ the HGI ( even @ $319 a night!)...

What would Paris say?:D Thanks for the post!

As I said and others, it is peak season and event driven. I live here too and worked in Scotsdale for 25 years. This particlur HGI on Indian School Rd, is right in the heart of "Old Town" Sc(n)ottsdale and the high end celebrity entertainment night club district. I have stayed there and it is nice and within very close walking distance to all the winter tourist and shopping crap as well. This area is also being redevloped with a river front section and new and very pricey 'loft' style living surrounded by "Rodeo" drive type Bevery Hills stores. They get the money for the rooms, so they charge it. I wouldn't.
Go somewhere else as suggested. There is a new HGI in north Scottsdale right near the FBR Open Golf course site (Tournament Players Club) on Princess Dr. I would expect this one to be high as well. During the summer, you can have anything for under $100.

Busy times lead to ridiculous prices. In a city of any size, there are options. Where I live, there are not. I have seen a Best Western selling rooms for $300 that command under $75 any night outside of race (Talledega) weeks.
Looks like you have options. ^

If ever there was a time to use points this was a no brainer
I booked last night the brand new Hyatt Place for 8000 Gold Passport points per night.
Thanks for the suggestion/ reminder by the earlier poster of this new brand
Actually very excited to try this new suite concept out with the Grand Bed, living room and other amenities. One of the great under the radar benefits of the Gold Passport program is that when revenue rooms are sold out the award space is held under separate allotment and available until it runs out. They too were high at 229- 249 per night however. Though the HGI holds the record here!
At 8000 Hyatt Gold Passport points per night I estimate that to be 50 dollars or less per night worth of points.
I would have never booked the Hyatt Place if the Garden Inn wasn't charging more then some 5 star hotels.High demand or not
Gotta love these programs! They sure come in handy at times
