Hi!

I am considering switching from a Citi PremierPass Elite to Amex Rewards Gold and was wondering about the point conversion on MR or if there are any additional benefits worth having.

Thanks!

Welcome to Flyertalk.

If you are looking for a list of the airline and hotel programs to which Membership Rewards points can be transferred you may wish to look at this comparison chart created by Diners Club Mastercard which gives a reasonable synopsis of the redemption options for both programs...

Information about the Gold Card is here...

..and you should also consider Rewards Plus Gold, which can be better for earning points at certain airlines and hotel chains and actually works out less expensive if you need more than a single card, such as a supplementary card for a spouse or parent.

Thanks. Let me be a little more specific about my usage and what I need and don't need:

-My flying is generally limited to vacation travel, and some relatives which I will purchase tickets for to get the extra points.

-I have lounge access through my business amex. (I don't get the points from that).

Why I got the PremierPass:

- When I got it, TY Points did not have a relationship with Expedia, so the trade in value for Points was much better, 30,000 pts for Carribbean flights for example.

- I love the points for miles you fly deal.

So what I am wondering is how the redemption works with MR (the website seems to leave you hanging), or other points system, compared to TY, as well as if I would accrue points faster on another card through normal purchases.

Thanks!

The fixed flight options still exist. There will be a mass defections from this card when they get rid of fixed flight options.

Click "Travel Rewards" and look at #4. Caribbean is 40,000.

American Express generally awards one Membership Reward point per dollar, there is no feature that corresponds to Flight Points. As mtparadis mentioned, Thank You now offers two methods of redeeming points for flights. The Variable Option allows you to buy any ticket that is available through Expedia on the basis of $0.01 per point. The Fixed Option allows you to redeem a specified number of points for a flight but requires 14 day advance, Saturday night stay, and you are not guaranteed to travel the carrier, routing or times that you prefer.

But what stinks is that diners club charges 95 cents per 1000 miles transferred, While amex does not have these outrageous fees.

Doesn't Amex charge $0.40 per 1000 miles as a federal excise tax for US airlines?

A: Similar to other rewards programs, we charge a fee to offset the federal excise tax that American Express must pay when transferring points into a frequent flyer U.S. airline account. The fee is $0.0004 per point, with a maximum fee of $50, which will be charged to your account at the time the points are transferred.
